Default turbocharged 993's (not factory)

i'm new to the board but not to Porsche. I owned a '79 930 a few years back and kind of regret selling it ever since. I am now considering another one and I am in love with the looks of the 993, so thats where i'm focusing my attention. BUT, power is a concern. I am a turbocharger nut and just about every vehicle i've owned has either been factory or (self inflicted) turbo. I see the '95 is chipable (is that a word?) but the 96 is not. Does that include the 97 and 98 or do they use a different ECM than '96? I have searched but are there any of you with aftermarket turbos on your 993's?

Check out protomotive for turbos. Many have also gone the supercharger route as well. Someone (eric in chicago?) contemplated both, did a thorough analysis, and ended up doing one or the other.

Sorry Eric for the incorrect reference. Now that I think about it that's why you are The OTHER Eric, isn't it?

Out of curiosity, why not just buy a 993TT?

People that turbocharge a NA 993 generally do so because they already own a NA 993 that they love.

I agree with Rob - if you don't already own a 993 you should look at a 993TT.

To directly answer your questions, I believe the 1997 and 1998 are chippable. 1996 owners may be able to have their ECU flashed (seems like a pain) but can simply buy a 1997/1998 ECU instead. Probably $1500 to $2000 for the ecu.

great, i appreciate the replies. To answer some of your questions, I have way more ability than money and from what i've seen the n/a 993 cars seem to be holding very high value and the turbo models even more so. Also to give you some background on me I own a business that supplies the very items needed to DIY a turbo kit. I've built a couple of kits for my cars over the years and also have some experience with aftermarket electronics. Besides at this point in time i don't want to turbocharge it, that will be a decision i will make down the road and just don't want to end up with the wrong year car. I am a tinkerer, so buying a turbo model would take away part of my hobby. Eric, i will be following your build closely.

oh, one more thing. as much as i loved the look of my 930 i am now hooked on the narrow body cars, yellowbird style!!!! Which also brings up another oddity about me, i'm not a fan of yellow cars for the most part but the previously mentioned ruf and the car in TheOtherEric's avatar are simply stunning

drmatera: You sound like someone I know who pieced his turbo together, built most of the pipes for it, and did methane injection. Um yeah his RSX was dangerously way too fast. Check out the link in case you want to see what happens when you start tinkering with turbos on cars you love. =) btw he was shooting flames at my camera when I was trying to shoot from behind the car.

travanx - i'm not much into FWD import (japan) cars. My current car is a 1991 Mustang that i turbocharged. The factory short block (block, crank, rods, pistons, cam) held up to many 1/4 mile passes. It's best pass to date is 10.45 @ 134 mph. That was in full street trim, no weight reduction, pump 93 fuel and meth (methanol, not methane BTW) injection. I am quite familiar with turbocharging non-turbocharged vehicles, doing the tuning, fabricating and driving them as well. The 993 is a mechanical piece not unlike every other car out there. The engine will respond very well to increased atmosphere when additional fuel and moderate timing advance are applied. I have enough experience with the meth injection to know it works very well and with proper safety measures taken it can be virtually worry free. The Work wheels look great on the white car.

Quick Reply: turbocharged 993's (not factory)
