Default Front differential servicing. How?

Hi all,

could someone give infos concerning the servicing needed by the front differential on a 4S? I read a article in the 911 & PW (february issue... can you believe it!!) that the front differential had only 1 ltr of oil which needed attention.
I searched for a DIY instructions here, on Pelican and Pcarworkshop, but didn't find anything.

Thanks for your help.

Happy New Year to all of you!!

(Edited on 3 jan 08: job has been done, and you'll find a link to pictures on post 11)

Access is a little tight, but the fill plug is on the right side of the diff housing: both plugs take a large allan hex, but do not recall the size offhand. Remove the fill plug first!! .... for obvious reasons . Drain and fill with 75W-90 syn GL-5 .... takes ~3/4l IIRC. It helps to jam a length of tygon tubing over the nipple on the bottle, for the bottle must be raised up around the axle shaft .... and squeezed: I did so until there was overflow from the opening, then capped off.
It takes longer to swab up the mess than it does to fill the diff ...

I think that the plugs use a 17mm allen. Make sure you break the fill plug(top one) first before breaking the drain plug loose. They can be rather tight in there and you don't want to drain the differential and then not be able to fill it.

The plugs are 10mm
Good tip on removing the fill plug first...

From the factory the fill plug does NOT have a crush washer. This makes it a VERY tight plug. Plus you have very little room to work. I have broken 1/2" breaker bars in the past getting this open. When replacing, use a standard crush washer and tighten as you would the other drain plugs. You do NOT need to get it up to 200 lbs again....

The 2 plugs are out! Not too difficult, both had a washer. Thanks all for your advices.

I had some Pennzoil left in an unopened plastic can since...15 years! So I decided to go buy a liter of new 75w-90. Today is the first sale day. Crazy day should I say but those people from the car shop decided to keep their doors closed: so no oil until monday sh..!

Anyway things are fine as this gave me enough time to clean the pit floor where I inadvertenly drop the container with my half liter old oil!!!

Now I take a deep breath and think...It's probably time for a beer!

Well your site is a gold mine! I find it a natural extension of Rennlist. Here we discuss the why and how, and on pcworkshop we have the picture guide!
That's a great idea you had there!
