Default Arcing coil wire?

I was checking the oil level today and noticed some small arcing at the base of the coil wire boot at the upper distributor. Would this be an indication that the coil wire is shot? I did the caps, rotors and plugs apx 4K miles ago. I haven't noticed any lack of performance, but this can't be normal. '96 C2 w/ 70K miles

Dennis,

How old ARE your plug wires?

Steve, probably original, I bought the car w/ 64K on it and very little service history.

I had a similar problem at one point... even after applying dielectric grease, it would still arc.

Turns out, one of the plugs wasn't *perfectly" snug - once it was, no more arcing.

Might be worth double checking them all.

IMHO, they are LONG overdue for replacement.

Due to the cost of a replacement set, people are reticent to install new ones when they should, so this situation is somewhat common.

Well I guess that gets added to my "over the winter" list of projects. I have seen a post for a guy that sells the wire only cut to length. My boots look pretty good, is this an acceptable option?

I think you'll be surprised,......

A proper set contains all new wires, boots and connectors.

How does a properly functioning boot "look" ? ...and why half step a job that needs to be done in its totality? Unless of course you dont mind doing it over again in case you miss something in the "look"

What does the arcing look like? I have an intermittent CEL that pointed to misfire, emissions related. So says my durametric

Steve,
Do you recommend the OEM Beru wire sets, only; or are there some alternatives worthy of consideration? I suspect I know your response, but it never hurts to ask...
Thanks in advance!
