My first car was a 89 535i Auto. Get the 535i 5-speed from 89-93. Bullet proof engines and trans and a great support network (get him working the wrench!). They are still great looking cars, safe and quick, but not quick enough to be worried about.

I had Acuras as a kid and in college and put over 250,000 miles on them without a single issue. Not a bad choice if you can find one that fits your safety needs.
