Default 993 race car or GT3?

If you had a budget of around $150k and you were looking for a 911 to enjoy both on the street and at the track, which of the following options would you choose:

Option 1: 993 Carrera S garage queen + 993 RSCS clone (my build at a budgeted ~$75k and target of ~325HP/2,800lbs)

Option 2: 6GT3 and a 993 Carrera S garage queen

Option 3: 7GT3...maybe an RS

Things to consider:

1) I like the flexibility of having two cars...no compromises
2) FEEL and the FUN FACTOR are more important than going fast at this point
3) Turbos are not an option (?)...I like NA
4) Rear seats are kid-friendly and desirable but not necessary

So, what say you?

PS - I'm particularly interested in hearing from those who've driven a 993 race car (at least DE prepared) and a 6 or 7 GT3.

I'm confused. You say you want a "911 to enjoy both on the street and track" but then say you "like the flexibility of having two cars...no compromises."

So, do you want a dual-purpose 911, or a no-compromises track car plus a fun street car?

If you can have two cars, IMHO you should run a lightweight 993 at the track, and have a GT3 for the street. That would be kick-***.

Louis,

Was going to pipe up and say I had both 6GT3 and 993 but - the GT3 was an RS and the 993 is a TT..... so sort of irelevant - but i am a bit biased.

PM me if you want my thoughts - I had a similar (sort of) dilema going on but am happy with my decision.

Simon.

Here's what I'd do if I had $150K burning a hole in my pocket:

1. 993 track appliance: approx $40K
2. Cayenne GTS tow vehicle and adrenaline machine for the street: $80K
3. Trailex open trailer: $7K
4. Toyota Prius (token effort to appease the environmentally conscious neighbors): $23K

It really depends on your objectives.. and you really need to be honest with yourself...

Do you really not care about speed and just want to go out and have fun on the track? If so that gives you alot of flexibility. I would take the whole 150k and blow it on a GT3rs. But assuming you dont have another 150 waiting to replace the car, that means you are going to be driving a at 7-8 tenths (albeit a very fast 7-8 tenths)..

Do you really want to push it and drive 10 10 tenths? Then you are talking a full race car, full cage, etc. You need to consider the big picture... building the car is just a small percentage of the cost.
To build a full race car I would allocate $75k up front (I know it sounds high, but that is what it will cost to build a "stock" race car, trust me).
a couple of sets of tires/rims - 10k
Tow vehicle - 40k
Trailer and incedentals (fuel jugs, ties downs, etc) - 4k for open 10k for enclosed
20k / year for expendables/maintinence (you will bump a wall or over-rev at some point)

There is your 150k....

Just my 2 cents...

Louis, you're a 993 guy... I can't see you choosing a path that doesn't include at least one. And I voted for 2 993s.

Noah: What I tried to convey is that I want the ability to drive a 911 on the street and at the track. An ideal scenario is a 911 street car and a 911 track car with option 3 being the compromise.

Glen: Interesting suggestion. Frankly, I don't like the idea of a Cayenne but the GTS looks and sounds awesome and the manual box could push me over the edge. Not so hot on the Prius idea though.

jscott: Thanks for asking the tough questions. This is obviously something I've given lots of thought. At this point, speed is not a priority. I'd rather drive a slow car fast than the other way around. I've also given lots of thought to the idea of walking away from a $100k+ car and though unnerving, it's something that can be fixed with a shift in perspective. The full race car build is also something that needs to be further thought out. My local track is very small and there are few club events at Seattle and Portland. I can make occasional trips to CA but the reality is that I'll be doing mostly track days and some club racing so I need to think through what the class requirements are and weigh that into how the car will be built. This will also dictate whether I build a car that can be driven to events or one that needs to be towed which requires additional $$$.

I'm going to say get 2 993s! You know them, & if one breaks, you can rob parts from the other one.

964 RS from Europe (not an RS America) . Over 15 year old, meaning no real problem to register it in Canada. Or wait another 2 years and bring a 993 RS

At least in my personal experience, trying to have a car that is a great street and track car makes for a car that is poor at both. After all that is what Porsche is all about, building a good compromise car. The stock 911 is compromised more for comfort/street, the GT3 and GT3rs, more aimed at the track. I don’t think anyone could argue, this is tough to beat. Unless you want to forgo the compromises and build a car dedicated to one or the other, you would be hard pressed to do a better job than the experts. I can only speak to my personal experience, but trying to outdo Porsche at their own game opens a VERY steep/slippery slope of changes. If not a dedicated race car... Go with the RS.....

You bring up a good point for all to consider reguarding racing. You need to consider long and hard where you want this to go.... Will you be content not competing with your new "track weapon"? (really think about this one and answer yourself honestly)… I know my original plan was to just get out there and "have fun" so I built a really cool, really fun car. Again I can only speak from personal experience, but as soon as I got out there and started passing people, I needed to race.... Guess what? With all my cool "mods" the car would not be competitive, nor safe (no full cage) in its class.... So back to the drawing board, sell that car and start over with a new one purpose built for its class (I picked the class based on my budget and where my friends were). Tough lesson learned for me....

(ok Ill get off my soapbox now) :-) best of luck with your "dilema"

I used to think option 1 would fit my needs too.........then I got some quality seat time on the street and track in a new 07 GT-3 and my opinion that there was no such thing as a dual purpose car changed completely.

I vote a regular GT-3 with carbon brakes some mods to make it safe (full cage, fire bottle, etc.) and a few sets of wheels.....ZP44
