PDK Trans, Thoughts?
#16
My thought is wait till it breaks out of warranty! They say the clutches can withstand infinite launches on it.
Like most other types of trans like this, they are a bad in very light throttle applications, like parking, or backing up.

Mike, thanks for the wishes. I'm already plotting my return to 911 world. So far, it looks like another 993.
Here's more good reading on PDK and for the record, I fully agree with the OP: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-gt3-forum/449200-pdk-driven.html

After 45 years of manuals, I was compelled by discomfort from a previous left knee surgery to consider an automatic. Drove a Tip and did not like it, but had to get it anyway.
13K miles later, and spending 80% of my time in heavy local traffic, I am delighted I got it. I thought I would miss the 6 in the twisties, but the Tip in Manual mode suits me fine.
In about 9.5 years I will trade in for the latest PDK equipped TT.

"If the above niggles were resolved and if I did a LOT of track days, I might revisit the subject, but giving up the involvement of heel/toe interaction is, for me, a tall order. The good news is that, if that's not an issue for you, you f-i-n-a-l-l-y have a truly SUPERB alternative."
This pretty much sums it up for many a Porsche owner....

PDK adds around 66 lbs, whereas the Tip added 88 lbs. So not bad, but I'd prefer to add 0 lbs.
And the cost to fix or replace a PDK would be HORRIBLE no doubt.
So the PDK might be convenient, but I wouldn't pay extra for it.

They can laugh all they want, I know I will be passing by.....the PDK is far superior to a manual transmission, it's not a secret. But if you want ultimate performance now connected to ultimate comfort, why not? I agree it's quite different, but better most certainly it is. Numbers do not lie.

No argument here as the vehicles equipped with the PDK are quick, quicker even. I just might like a P-car with one, but I'm not so sure. I own a VW equipped with a DSG - if only to long term test drive the Dual Clutch Transmission technology. Soon every tier one sports sedan will have this technology. Make mine an Audi 3.0TDI w/7sp DSG gearbox or BMWs excellent 3.0 twin turbo diesel with a DCT. There coming to a market near you ~ Make mine silver w/black leather!
The replacement cost on VWs DSG gearbox is pricey, about $7k for the gearbox alone, that and few dearlership tech's have a clue. Those PDKs had better be robust or at least price the warranty cost into the option. Do ya think; $4K.

Some, like myself, are not physically able to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission - I am paralyzed. Thankfully Porsche decided to offer an auto option and I too am able to enjoy the Porsche experience.

me too numb!! I would love a manual, but I can not, and now that they offer a PDK or will, I can't wait! I too currently own a 2008 VW R32 with DSG and love it. It's quite a piece, if I had my druthers, I would take one manual car and one PDK/DSG car, but since I can not, PDK here I come! I know it's a dumb argument either way, but to each his own......and it's a shame that someone would make fun of anyone who is a fellow P-car driver........

PDK = Modern Manual transmission
All of the con arguments could be equally applied to crank start vs electric start. (weight, cost, repair, etc.). But who today would buy a car with crank start?
It's called technology evolution.
