Why did you buy a Porsche?

3-4 years ago, I wanted a real sports car. I made a spreadsheet of every make I'd consider, comparing features. All had issues for me, save the 911. Thought I should like the newest ones out there at the time, the 996. Couldn't get it up for that model. Started looking at 993's, which cost about the same as used 996's at the time. Though logic framed the decision, emotion carried the day. Lucky me.

My dad was a car nut and had several cool cars when I was growing up, and I guess it rubbed off on me. When I started driving, he had a 356 Cab which was very cool, but I still lusted for the newer 911's. A few years after college, when the 993 came around, I fell in love, and new that I would eventually own one. I am still in love with it to this day!

I'd always like Porsche's design, but assumed that they (like many high-performance sports cars) were temperamental, unreliable and high-maintenance.
Then I watched an episode of the BBC's Top Gear about buying a used 911, and the rest was history.
That was five years ago,and now I can't imagine driving anything else.
Even more astonishing: the car has appreciated in value since I bought it, due to the increase of the Euro against the HK$, and the improvement in Hong Kong's economy.

Divorced the hubby... sold his Mercedes and started looking for a cab... drove a bunch of things I hated... and started dating a guy with a 928 (bad car and bad boyfriend)... but... since he was at the repair shop all the time, I spotted my car there for sale (owner had the steering rack repaired) ... I took it for a test drive and couldn't get it out of my mind!
I wrote the check four days later and couldn't be happier! ... and it doesn't hurt that boys dig it!

For me it was the natural progression. I had always owned German (VW's), but never air-cooled. I had a couple of 944's and although I love those cars, it just didn't seem to reflect my inner feelings for what I felt I should be driving. As a kid, I, like probably every kid of the 80's had the red slant nose poster on my wall, so it was something I had been looking forward to since being a young teen. At this point in my life, I decided that I wanted a 911, and found that I liked the interior of the 993 the best of all the previous model years. I did look at, and almost bought a 964, but in the end the 993's just "did" it for me. I started my quest thinking I'd want a cab, PPI'd a couple that turned out to be junk, fell into this black wide body.........and the rest is history

When I was 15 years old, I worked in a Porsche repair shop part time. We were restoring a 1966 911. When that car was done, I said to myself, one day I'm going to buy a Porsche.. I purchased Barney 3 years ago at the age of 41...Many C2's and other 911's were tempting, but I wanted a Twin Turbo and here I am now..
What a great place !!
All 3 0f my cars are German- 325XI BMW, Mercedes C320 4-matic, 993 Twin Turbo.

My first 3 cars were Corvairs...a Monza, a turbo Spyder and a turbo Corsa. This was back in the musclecar era when my buddies were driving GTO's, SS Chevelles, Mopar 440's and hot Mustangs, so I was the odd guy with the strange car. But the Corvairs would do something that their cars wouldn't do - handle decently. And the air-cooled rear engine design made a lot of sense to me. That was more appealing to me than straight line speed, although the turbocharged Corvairs could be made to go very quickly.
Then it happened...I went to an auto show in Nashville where the new 1967 models were being showcased. I laid eyes on a Polo Red 1967 911S coupe that stunned me like a taser. I vowed at that moment that as soon as I finished college and had a decent job, I would have a Porsche. And I did. That first one was a lovely pre-owned slate grey 912.
41 years later, I am happily driving my 20th Porsche, ironically it's a red 911 coupe.

Third grade, sitting in the front seat of my Mom's '65 VW Beetle, waiting at the red light at Craycroft and Grant Rd in Tucson, AZ. Across the intersection was an Irish Green 911 or 912 and I thought it looked like a frog. This must have been in the summer because it had been raining and there were storm clouds over the Catalinas. At that moment I knew I had to have a Porsche. I pretty much have a photographic memory of every Porsche that I saw from about 1968 to 1998.

why did you buy
I have admired Porsches for many years, and always thought about one day owning a 911. When I (sort of) quit riding motorcycles last year, I started thinking about something to replace the bike, and a 993 fit the bill.
It's beautiful, fast, compact, and unique, but also very reliable.
As for good looks, I think the 993 is right in there with the Jaguar XK-E and Maserati Ghibli.

I collected lots of 1:18 scale 993 when I was younger - coupe & cabs just different colours. And I said one day I would get one when I am capable.
And there was something about the 944 that I always liked when I first saw them in the late 80s and early 90s when I was still in grade school.
Guess my taste never changed! And I now I have them.
