The new Excelons iPod controls work like your iPod - no need for playlists anymore. I had one of those, but hated the display. Swapped out to my Alpine 9886. I think the Alpine kills the Excelon in terms of asthestics and ergonmics.

Do a search. I got Booming bass without a sub by using Focal 165Ks and an MTX amp with Kenwood rears and HU.
RB reckons that Kenwood consistently delivers a clean sound.
I unstalled it myself and dynamatted the doors to stop the wing mirrors from falling off! You can get great hifi in a 993...

A local stereo shop just recommended the Boston Acoustics 6.5's because they have unusually good bass response for the size. They were $1777/pair
I could probably buy them in the good old USA for half but they are still expensive!

I'd like to hear the difference this super-dynamat install makes. Probably $400 worth of material...

Rod is awesome. I bought my Kenwood from him and he was super helpful. Doersn't sell Alpine. Lots of other nice brands on speakers and amps, though.
Crutchfield has a couple of Boston models if you wanna check there, Matt.

I would suggest one of two simple solutions: The Alpine unit which has been tabled 9884 or 9886; or in the alternative - radio delete. Just listen to her purr...........................Just my .02....
I just replaced my CDR-210 with an Alpine here in Houston. The amp started to snap, crackle and pop (Rice Krispies or AM radio in a thunderstorm) last Tuesday. No sound at all on Wednesday. New radio on Friday. I fully admit to ignorance on most topics including radios as I do not listen to much in the car other than the sound of the engine. My guy at Houston cartronics here told me (I have no reason to not believe him) that to replace the original amp in the car would be between $1 and $2k. An easy decision for me to install the 9884 ($350 installed).
Good luck with it.

Rhino,
please post mre photos of your car! That interior is great, the two tone and that carpet look stunning man. I have thought about adding subs in the same locations as you, but since my car is a cab I have a little less room. You have to bring that car to one of our norcal gtg's.

I posted a thread back in January regarding what I had done to upgrade the car. I dont know how to capture the link and put it in this thread but if you do a search for: "My summer fall project with many pictures", you will see.
I plan on bringing it to some event this summer for sure.

First off, thanks for all the great advice on my stereo problem. I just got the car back from its second visit to the car audio shop. Here's what solved the problems:
- Installed higher quality Planet Audio speakers
- Installed Dynamat around the door and rear speakers
- Replaced the factory speaker wiring
- Got rid of the 5 channel amp installed last week and replaced it with a higher quality 4 channel amp (200x4)
- No additional charges for parts or labor
What a difference! I know the sound would be even better if I'd spent more money, but for my $1,700, I'm very happy and it now blows the factory setup away.
Again, thanks to all for the great advice and input.
