R8 for an evening
500 kms on the counter, sequential gearbox.
Impressions: hard to accomodate with 2 things, gearbox and redzone...
The gearbox is a hassle. You shift to first, and the car always brakes automatically if still. You have to push on the accelerator to release the brake.
On a redlight, the car shifts to Neutral after 10-15 seconds in gear, and brakes by itself.
I felt there was no torque, the car hits red 8000/rpm very very quickly and you don't feel it. the gears are very short. The gearbox upshifts in manual, but AFTER the cutoff, and unfortunately not just before...
Engine sound growls loud outside. It does not rev up in a high pitch, but with a Rottweiler bark type bass sound.
The suspension is fantastic, like a well balanced 993 on 18...
Seats similar to 997 GT3, alcantra...
Brakes are very sensitive, I prefer the hard pedal.
Rode for 200 kilometers on highway, and then a couple of hours of drifting in Paris. Easily puts you in confidence while drifting with maximum control sensation, but you have to forget the gearbox.
The steering wheel shape is cool f1 type for speed, but unpractical for drifting.
You open the front lid, everything is similar to porsche. The battery comp, luggage comp, washer fluid cap, etc.
In the city, I was amazed how everybody stares at the car. Tourists were taking pictures of the car on every street.
Awesome led lights in front. Went and had coffee on a terasse in the picture, and watched people staring. Had impression that they were curious because its an Audi, and Audi is accessible financially.
I stick to my 993

Audi R8 = affordable? Most expensive Audi I've seen to-date...
But I understand the rationale. I was in a Z8 once and had a nice family in a minivan come up alongside...
"Nice car!"
-Thanks.
"That's one of dem new BMW's, right?"
-Yep!
"Look honey...and I think they are only $30 grand or so..."
-Umm...no.
Gotta love ignorance.

And the TDi car has an "additional" vent on the side of that lovely scoop. It looks like the third door on a Saturn Ion. I love the idea of the car, but the proportions look awkward to the eye. Something just makes the cars wheelbase look too long and the overhangs way too short. But what do I know........
