Default Techron cap seal in gas tank

Stoopid...stoopid...stoopid.

...so instead of taking off the seal entirely, I just removed it 3/4 of the way. Sure enough, it came off as i was pouring in the solution.

I assume it'll keep floating around in the tank until that unfortunate day when it blocks the intake.

Suggestions/opinions/comments?

Boy howdy! That's the paranoia that I've always had. Maybe she'll poop it out.

Maybe it will forever float.

And I always thought I was **** when I removed every little bit of foil... Perhaps not so much.

You can easily remove the fuel level sender and have a 2" (or so) straight shot hole to the tank. Seems like you should be able to siphon the foil out at that point, if you can find it.

Good luck.

Default Hope this makes you feel better

I was getting ready to fill up at a Shell station in the heart of the Silicon Valley. THese were heady days in the mid 80s with VCs running around with buckets of money. Some such type pulled up in a chauffer driven 600/Adenaur MBZ limo. I realized I needed to add some water to the windshield washer so I added water for what seemed like an awfully long time and it never filled up. WHen I finally looked down I saw that I had poured several gallons of water in the gas tank. Since I was late for a meeting, I filled it with gas and drove off to work. The car never ran right again. How's that for dumb. Now as to your little piece of foil, it won't disintegrate before the car goes to the crusher. If you are still nervous, remove the tank and insert a small gauge chain and swirl it around (keep hold of one end of it). Once in a while pull it slowly out in hopes that you have hooked the offending metal bit. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BE TO AGGRESIVE CAUSE YOU COULD SCRATCH THE INSIDE OF THE TANK AND INVITE RUST. ANother technique is to magnetize a metal rod like a coathanger. (you can get a little magnetizer at Pep Boys for $2.) Insert it in tank and hope to snag it that way. THis technique allows you to leave tank in car. Hope this helps or at least makes yoiu feel better.

The foil is probably aluminum.

Shoot. I am thinking old school "tin" foil;. Hell, aluminum. It will never deteriorate.

My gas tank looks like plastic. Are 993 tanks plastic?

Instead of trying to fish it out, what if you just kept your fuel tank at least 1/4 full, then it will never get low enough to get plugged up in the pickup.

My 68 had a little strainer that went in the bottom of the tank, it was a couple inches long. the 993s aren't like that? A Techron foil bit would have a hard time clogging that.

Thanks for this post BTW, I will be more careful in the future. I also worry about little black plastic shavings as I pull the bottle out.

Thanks to everyone for their comments...plan at this point is to not let the tank get too low and assume i have a "swimmer".

Or you could overfill your tank (catching the spillover somehow) and flush it out. It floats doesn't it?
I betcha I have at least a couple in there.

Inspecting a 993 gas tank closely, you would realize that it would be very very very very hard to clog anything inside...
The tank is plastic as everybody said, and the fuel filter is a sort of 3 cms by 20 cms tube that starts at about
10 cms from the bottom of the tank and goes up diagonally to the center of the tank.
the whole surface area of the tube is a filter mesh.
If you remove the fuel filter and the fuel drains out from the fuel filter hole, it is good to know that there will
be about 10 centimeters of fuel left in the tank.
I changed the filter on mine and the cleaness of the filter after 11 years shows that nothing could clog it,
unless the tank is filled with mud completely.
In my opinion, only chance to remove the bit " if it floats" is as mentioned above, by the level sender 15 cms hole on top of tank.
