Default Dumb question: is a 993 hood the same as a '74+ shorthood?

I thought for a long time about putting a fiberglass hood on my car, and a friend has one from his shorthood 911 for sale. Are these hoods all the same, from '74-'98? They sure do look the same. I searched and this hasn't been covered.

As far as overall size/shape/fit goes, I am not sure. Good question.
The hood part # is the same 87-94. The hood on my 964 sure looks identical is overall size to my 993.
Earlier, I don't know.
Knowing Porsche, they probably retained the same shape/size all of the way through and the PN differences are likely small changes that wouldn't effect fit.

Not that it matters much but the windshield squirters are in the hood on a 993.
Hopefully someone else knows more.

I "believe" that the cowl was raised in the 993 models... a serious redesign that changed a number of body panels by a small amount. I opened this thread to read a definitive answer on this topic... my opinion is strictly hearsay.

Ok, I just checked the GT Racing (fiberglass body parts) online catalogue, and they list a fiberglass hood for sale for all 1974-1998 911's.

http://www.gt-racing.com/pdfs/GTR993.pdf

Of course, that doesn't mean it's the same part; but it is strong evidence that it is.

I recall reading (though which book I can't remember) that the only old 911 sheetmetal that remained intact through the 993 stage was the roofline and the hood. So that would jive with your finding from GTRacing. BUT, that doesn't mean that the holes line up (if the hinge mechanism is diff). Let us trivia geeks know, would ya?

I considered a FG hood before and talked to one of the FG maker (can't remember which) about it. Basically, the 993 hood is slightly shorter, about 5mm as i recalled. He said it should fit but may require trimming.

When you say "the cowl" do you mean the indented center section of the
hood that leads up to the fresh air intake? Having owned an '85 it doesn't
look like the center indent on the 993 hood is as deep as it was on my
'85.

The "cowl" is the panel under the windshield that houses the wipers. If it is true, that it is raised, then a number of body panels would be different... not sure about the hood. The front fenders from a pre 993 model would not matchup to the cowl on a 993, if this is true. As I said. I'm repeating hearsay.

Thanks for the clarification. Looks like an interesting point to compare the
next time the 993 and I are in the presence of older 911's.

Yes, the cowl is higher on the 993 (I recall this from the same book). Again, the sheetmetal of the *hood* is the same, but the entire hoodline is higher (duh, you can see it ) because of the raised cowl. Remember that the 964 was purportedly 85% new parts (that it did NOT share with the 911 before it). So it stands to reason that the 993's host of changes includes, not least of which, different body metal/plastic.
