Default 993 In-car video @ Homestead speedway

Just had an awesome weekend at the Miami-Homestead speedway with PCA and PBOC (a local club).

We were driving our 993's with a good friend of mine, Flying Finn. Finn was instructing both days and had to jump directly from the student's car into his own to join our session in the Advanced/Solo run group. This meant we would allways start from the bottom of the grid and really couldn't get many clean laps. But, passing can be fun too!

We were both on Hoosier R6's and at the end of the weekend ran constant 1:44 - 1:45s even in the traffic. I think Finn even timed some 1:41 laps.
I was timing some of the race cars during the club race and a 964 RSA was doing 1:45 - 1:46 laps, which makes me think our times were pretty decent for street 993's with no engine modifications at all. HP is not everything!

I had a Racepak G2X in my car so I'll try to embed the telemetry on the video later too.

Here's the vid:

That's kewl..!!!

Couple of quick questions.......

- What kind of stereo system do you have? I enjoyed the tunes while waiting on pit-out...

- Are those SPARCO race gloves?? Do you like them??

- Wow - was this a Mini Event with a few Porsches to "push them along"???

- They let you drive in short sleeves???

- When folks gave the point-by (in some cases, for the duration - multiple times ) you never failed to flip them the finger - or was that your thumb??

As for the rest the tape - NICE DRIVING!! And I agree with Dave - it looks like a fun track... Nice job and thanks for posting!

Hahah! Thanks guys!

John, to answer your questions:

Stereo: Nakamichi deck with OEM speakers and amp + Scorpions CD

Gloves: Yes, these are Sparco gloves. I like them but wish they were not real racing gloves so they could be shorter so I wouldn't need to wrap them like I do now (otherwise it's allways a hassle when the organizers want to see the wristband.)

Mini's: This was a joint event with PCA and PBOC (Porsche and BMW Owner's club). PBOC has quite a few members that have nicely modified track Mini's. They are fun to pass but I'd rather watch them in my rear view mirror during the initial pit out, hence my comment in the beginning of the tape...

Short sleeves: It depends on track and organizer. At some events we are allowed to drive full monty... (Joke of course). Some allow short sleeves but require long pants, some require all long and some let drive with shorts and short sleeves.

Thanks for the compliments, I'm trying hard to come a better and faster driver. I've had fast mentors (Flying Finn, ErikG, Christian20 etc. just to name a few) so gotta give some credit to them as well!

That was fun to watch, thanks for posting!! Just curious, what kind of speeds are you seeing on the longer stretches?

I agree - he's doing GREAT!! I'd love to be his instructor for a session or two, AND - he's got a nice line, and Juha - one thing that you do that most rookies don't - is that you stick to YOUR line, which is great to see (for example - most new folks would "follow" the cars in front - even the minis/BMWs. You didn't - which was one of the first things I noticed in your clip. You kept to "your line")...

I'll also tell you - you are very smooth and "easy" with your 993, which most newer folks have a tough time with..... And, it looks like your instructors (Hey F.F.!!) - did a terrific job with the basics. You, my friend - are doing awesome...

Really awesome...!!!!

Check out the local clubs (this particular was with PBOC & PCA).

PCA Gold Coast Region
PBOC
CHIN
NASA

Probably best to go with PCA or PBOC as they are more Porsche orineted so you might find it easier but they're all good clubs.

See Flying Finns real reply...

My reply???

I see by your avatar - you do Auto-X.... Auto-X is nothing like driving on the track. Auto-X is 35 seconds of fun. Track is 30 minutes of fun...

And what's more...

I did Auto-X once.... Once. One time. there are too many cones in the middle of a perfectly great straightaway. There are about 2000 cones. Maybe 5000 cones.. Why are there sooo many cones? I have no idea...

And the scoring system. Let's chat about the Auto-X scoring system....

I did Auto-X once. I take two runs... I get a silly little score card. It says:

OC

Kewl. I hit - in my world "0" (ZERO) Cones ("OC")... I'm pumped... I like Auto-X - hell - I didn't hit any of like 10,000 cones. I'm good. I'm the next Auto-X champ. I then - actually LIKED Auto-X...

I take my third run. I'm pumped. My engine is screaming - I'm liking this. I have like 10 seconds to miss ANY of the now 40,000 cones on the stupid track... I'm flying.... I launch - I drive like a madman. I DO NOT HIT ONE CONE!!! NOT ONE CONE - IN NOW LIKE 80,0000 CONES ON THE COURSE!!!...

I come in.

I get my "scorecard"....

I have another "0C"..

DAMN - I AM GOOD!!!

I start bragging.... I show my scorecard around. Folks are chuckling - I dun'no why - hell - it's my first auto-x (and little did I know - MY LAST!!) I figure they are envious of my driving prowness...

Little did I know "0C" means "off course"....

Stupid.... Too many cones - about 150,000 in a normal course....

Do DE.... Less cones. No scorecard....

You'll love it....

I do...

Thats awesome!
I've been autoX'ing for a while with a very close friend and we have decided its time to move on. Maybe not for the same reason as you John, but still, time to move on (up).
This was one of the very important factors in buying the 993, motivation to actually get some good track experience!

I can contest, Finn's 993 sounds AWESOME!

He's got aftermarket headers, sport cats and no mufflers at all...
