Replacing rear bumper supports....
.. I've been advised by my wrench man that the above needs to be done pronto , that the bumper stays are completely 'rotten' to quote him directly .
I've done a search and found little mention of this , and certainly no photos.
I've no idea how bad the supports are (haven't had a chance to look yet) but would appreciate advice from anyone who has previously removed rotten bumper supports ...
Thanks

Barney - don't you mean the heat shield stay-bars.
Sadly, a common failure. They can be welded but my local techie said to leave well alone.
A bit like the oil leaks - start to meddle and suddenly its a mega-buck repair!

Hi Shamrock,
I think you can do it by removing the wheel and wheel arch liner and reaching underneath. It's a very common problem. It's just a bar that supports the bumper. if you push the bumper just behind the rear wheel it shouldn't move about, providing the support bar is intact.
You may want to go all the way and remove the whole rear bumper and check that all the exhaust heat shields are intact. If you do this put plenty of masking tape on the body before sliding the bumper away from the car as it's very easy to scratch the bodywork.
The whole thing is a DIY job.

either lots of heat (torch) or lots of PB blaster (anti rust chemical). I have to do mine and have the "new" ones sitting in my tool chest but have never gotten around to doing it I bought the bars on Ebay used, they were $20 ea. IIRC from some re-cycler out in California.

Would you have part no.s or workshop diagrams with the parts illustrated by any chance? ..
I did a bit of feeling under the rear bumper today and the left one is flaking but still hanging in there , the right one is toast and has come adrift. I can't figure where they attach to the chassis though , and how much of the muffler / shields I'll have to remove to gain access..
