Default newbie looking for advice. (holt & Weissach Autohaus )

I am or should I say I will be in the market for a 993 within the next 9-12 months, and I have been looking at the inventory on both Holt motorsports and Weissach Autohaus' web sites. I know Holt is local for me (I live outside Philly) and I have emailed back and forth with Tim. His prices are a bit higher than Weissach Autohaus whom I have never talked to, but their cars are very nice looking. I am new to all this, since the last 911 I had was a 92' c4 that I purchased in 1996 with 11k miles from Don Rosen Imports. I had to sell it a year later, since I couldn't fit my daughter's infant seat in it. Now my childeren are 11 and 7 and they can and want to ride in the "jump seats" so I am looking now, because I only have about 9 months left on my BMW lease.

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at their website, Weissach is overpriced by a few $k vs the market just like Holt. That's what you pay to buy a well detailed and presumably checked out car from a dealer.

As everyone will tell you, you MUST get an independent PPI. Holts is near Dougherty's and Performance Automotive, both of which are (with few exceptions) well regarded independent Porsche specialists.

A quick check of the classifieds here shows 17 993s for <$40k. It's getting to be the season for sportscar sales, so you'll see lots here and on Ebay. Might want to weigh the benefit of accepting a bit of uncertainty and a little less convenience and saving $10k.

Searching for these cars is a nationwide game. Even if Holt was across the street from me, he'd be just another seller. Factor in $2,000 shipping from anywhere in the country, and you've leveled the playing field and can make informed decisions. You can search this very forum for a PPI near any major city.

I've bought from Holt over a year ago, and am happy. His prices are high though. Cars are nice too...

I fully reccomend Bill Boys at Possum Hollow Motorsports in Phoenixville, PA for a PPI. Honest guy and knows aircooled inside out. no affiliation etc etc.

I'll repeat the obvious. You must get an independent PPI. Protect yourself.

Good luck

These dealers really add no value to a transaction, they find the cars they sell in the same places you can find cars for sale as well. Once you are totally ready to pull the trigger and buy something, use the internet and check Panorma (PCA), this forum and the the larger Posche dealers for their trade ins. Also get a subscription to Autoweek. The used car dealers need profit and they get it by hiking their selling price and tough negotiations with the seller, and its the latter that you can do yourself and save. PPI imperative in either case, so that expense is a constant.

+1 !!! I know, it's counterintuitive, but I saw some great deals come and go at Porsche dealers. To them, taking in an "old" 993 is more of a courtesy to a good customer. I expect they're making a few bucks on the 997 that goes out the door! To them, the 993 is just inventory they want off the books. They don't have the emotional connection and pride that leads to higher asking prices.

Might make sense to buddy up with the right new Porsche sales guy, who can call you as soon as they come in. I told them, "I'll take it dirty. Don't waste money on me for detailing!"

Make a nationwide search. I bought my first 993 only 5 miles from my house in No. NJ on the first day I started looking seriously. I bought my second 993 in Kentucky after a 2 month search. Flew down, got a PPI and drove home with the biggest smile on my face 2 days later. I would have paid $8-10K more from a dealer for sure. Also, when one Porsche nut buys a car from another nut, there is so much more confidence in what you are buying. Nothing like meeting the previous driver face to face and seeing where/how he or she kept the car..................

If you wind up buying a 993 from Holt you won't be sorry. They usually keep great cars on their lot.

With the dealers you pay a premium for having many choices in one location. That's the route I took
because time and travelling expenses were big factors. I didn't have the time or money for a nationwide
search. I would not buy a car without seeing it myself. Being a Concours participant the car has to be as
"mint" as advertised.

+1 with Possum Hollow - Bill (and Gary) are class acts.
