I don't want to pick any fights here. But I have been in a few 993s and 964s lately and in all cases the 964 seems to be a lot quicker. Do you find this to be true? Is the older car's 5 speed better for acceleration? Or have by been in lame 993s all this time (kidding, I know I have been in good ones). Thanks for any insight.

Uh yeah, right. Rather a troll-type post, don't ya think? If you know anything at all about cars, surely you can read specs on power, weight, acceleration, etc. So why don't you start with that.

Jen & I have a 993 C4 and a 964 C4 (well - and a '68 911L ).... To be serious - the 964 "feels" lighter on the track, but the 993 feels nicer on both the track on the street... As for your note - the answer is "no" - neither is actually "quicker", but it could feel that way depending on who is driving, how it is set up and the individual make up of either example...

So - the answer is "no" - apparently - you have been in either lame 993s or 993s with lame drivers. Your choice....

Let's put it this way, I didn't choose the 993 over a 964 for speed reasons.

Thanks for the posts that were constructive and did not use the word "troll." I know the specs, I know the cars. I have some seat time as driver and passenger in both and the 964s seem to accelerate a lot harder in the first three or so gears. I have looked at old articles etc and seen some that say the 993 hits 60 in 5.2 or 5.5 and the 964 is 4.9. Then I asked around some and was told the 6 speed robs the 993 of a lot of potential due to the tall gears. Seems odd - I would think they would be shorter since there is one extra.

I like the 993 more overall but I am torn because the 964 seems to have more punch. And I wondered if anyone else feels the same way or if I am just mistaken.

I asked in here because I knew the 964 group would agree of course.

I've owned two 964 RS Americas, and the last one I had felt noticeably quicker than my 993, although I don't have any hard numbers to establish that with certainty. I purchased it used, and it had done some track time before I got it so it may not have been 100% stock. But visually it appeared completely unaltered. The 964 RSA was somewhat lighter than the 993, which would explain the very similar perceived performance.

On the other hand, my 993 feels a bit quicker to me than my first RSA, which I purchased new. There are performance variations among identical cars.

Yours is a fair question...there are evidently some very sensitive 993 owners on here. I'm not one of them.

Considering "bang for the buck", the 964 (the RSA excepted) is a relative bargain as they generally have lower resale value than a 993 with comparable mileage, condition, equipment and color. I'd avoid the '90-91 models unless they have had the cylinder leakage problem corrected. It seems that every Porsche model has an "issue". The '92-94 964's are great cars if you don't mind the somewhat bulbous bumpers.

I really like 964s, especially the RS but in reality the andwer is no.
