Molly, when I was looking for a 993 to replace my 964, I thought the 964 felt quicker and was dissappointed in the 993 expecting too much. I bought a 993 anyway for many other reasons and kept the 964. I found the 6 speed gearing made the 993 feel slower until I learned to drive with a bit more RPM before shifting. I don't know which one is faster, the suspension could be the culprit making them feel different. I've learned they are different cars, and I can't get enough of either one. Love them both for what each one offers.

I have them both
It depends which 964 you are talking about,/this one blows the doors off the 993

Molly's question is honest. In fact the 964 rawer attitude can fool us. However, both cars are pretty much the same. The 993 is a "pretty" 964. The cars are very similar and IMHO the 10k $ difference of the 993 over the 964 doesn't justify at all.

Fred is correct in saying that the gearing in US 993 cars leaves a lot to be desired. If driven correctly, a 993 will be a little faster than a comparable 964, all things being equal. Can it catch me? Not unless it's a turbo

I'd be surprised if there was much seat-of-the-pants difference between the two cars performance-wise, but I've yet to own a variation of the 911 that didn't "feel fast."
I think the 964 is a great, hugely under-appreciated car - Though I know I am not alone here in pointing to the fact I voted (enthusiastically) with my wallet on the 964 vs 993 issue.

I agree.

Just to join into the fun...
My 964 is much faster than my 993. My 964 is faster than a 997 GT3 too. But then, it's not a fair comparison. Comparing a stock 964 C2 to a stock 993 C2, the 993 wins. Start changing things (like an RSA to a 993 C2) and it gets to comparing apples to oranges.
While my 964 now has almost nothing stock left, once upon a time it was basically stock. Both are fun to drive and both are very similar performance wise.

Hmm... Porsche, a manufacturer of sports cars (at least they used to be) spends millions of dollars redesigning the 911 and comes up with a new version that is slower than the outgoing version. Hmm. Yeah, right. Makes sense to me.

But I think the original post had mainly to do with feel, and I do think the 5 v. 6 speed and slightly lower weight of the 964 gives an illusion that isn't present with the 993. Hell, I'll go even as far as saying the yellow car, 3.8 and short gears, gets me maybe 3-4 mph more than RSA #1 up the front straight at Thunderhill. And that's a pretty long straight.

It's a good question. I had a 964 with the secondary exhaust removed and it felt quicker to me than my 993's. That being said, it may have been an illusion as someone else said because it just felt more raw due to the suspension not being as nice as the 993. I like'm both.
