Pre first oil change question

Changed everything...thx for Rennlist & P-car advice. I screwed up a little in that I didn't have the funnel properly positioned for catching the wheel well filter oil, and then my car sits too low to get the jack stands under it on one side (or my garage is sloped). So I put one stand under, then left the lift in place under the block and changed away. When I pulled the case plug, oil of course went all over the jack and such.
I had all the tools I needed (I bought the Craftsman tool above, got the oil change goodies from Sunset, the oil from Brad Penn, the stands from somewhere on Rennlist they recommended), but still had to run to the store for kitty litter to clean up the freakin' mess. Doh!
Took 10 qts, so I'm guessing since I didn't put it on 4 stands, the slope of the car left some oil in there. I also didn't pull the oil lines. Figured that was close enough. We'll see how it runs at WG this weekend.
Thx again for tips/tricks/help.

Should I attempt
I have to be honest, I usually am not worried about attempting something such as this task. I recently replaced both resistors which in the end wasn't so bad bt after reading the numerous postings about scalding oil running all over the place I am worried. Needless to say I am not looking forward to dropping $$ for the shop to do it either. Who tired this once and isn't willing to do it again. Trying to gauge whether it's worth the attempt.

It will be less messy the next time ... Just take some old towels or rugs the first time to cover the ground until you experienced how the oil runs when opening the system at the specific locations.

It's not that bad. I was a bit intimidated after reading the numerous threads on oil changes. Did mine on four jackstands. I counted maybe 3-4 droplets of oil spilled on my garage floor. It's time well spent.

+1 Bonding time with your new girlfriend!
I've dug into this car a LOT more due to the awesome RL community. Tons of archives to read up on, help in a few hours when you have a question/problem, and awesome local Pcar friends you'll find as well.

OK. Just ordered the wrench. What really happens if I don't warm up the car first...not too excited about 200 degree oil landing anywhere near my skin. I usually just change oil when the car has cooled down (like, overnight).

Three Wheelin'
Warm is fine - you won't get all the oil out anyway. FWIW I just spread out a bunch of old newspaper, several pages thick. When I'm done I just fold it all up and toss it in the garbage. No muss, no fuss.
