Just my opinion, but I think my e30 (1989) convert is a classic along with the first M6s, M5s, & M3s of the eightys. Aside from MAYBE the new 1 series coupe, current BMWs are over styled, overly technical garbage that I wouldn't be caught dead owning out of warranty.

If I didn't have dogs to haul around, the wife would definitely be rolling an old skool 735iL right now. Awesome sedan. No navi, no I-drive, no problems. And +3: here in SoCal, there is sadly no enthusiast car with a lower percentage of enthusiasts than BMW The opposite of an Elise, a car so punshing, you have to be a car guy!

Raptor--surely thou speakest in jest. Every BMW that Chris Bangle had anything to do with is a monstrosity, cluttered with conflicting design elements. Every person I know who has a late-model BMW has had major problems, often left stranded alongside the freeway. Dealer service is even more pathetic than Porsche--one friend was told by the service manager that the I-Drive on his 760 couldn't be programmed correctly because of his heavy accent.

I have an X5 which is incredibly uninspiring... (until you get the "no bill" for scheduled maintenance like brakes, fluids, etc...their maintenance coverage is still tops) on the other hand, I was in a friend's either 750 or 760i the other day and it was definitely impressive. ...Although the cavalcade of electronic gadgetry was pretty over the top.

I have an X5 6 cyl. as my primary driver. I absolutely love it (80,000 miles and going strong). I agree that Bangle ruined the 7, and the 6, and the 5 (had an E39 before I was t-boned and totalled). But I love the look of the current 3 series coupe! No BMW can compete with a 993 IMO but I would seriously rather have a 335 coupe than a 997...

I think the Cayenne has tarnished Porsche's image a bit...(I see them EVERYWHERE)...but I still think it's more impressive to own a Porsche than a BMW.

Bob: Just posted for the hell of it. Personally, I abhor BMW. Bought one of the very first 530i in 1976, black with gold BBS (very cool at the time) and treated it with kid's kid's kid gloves. No other driver, always garaged, never in the rain, blah, blah, blah. At 12,000 miles the heads cracked because of the crappy design of recirculated high-temp gases. Dealer grudgingly paid for the heads but not the labor. Got the car back with a hood dent and a "gee, maybe some kids threw rocks over our fence and hit your car" - that being after I picked it up and noticed and brought it back. I don't really give a crap how strong they are now - they lost me for life at the head issue. Turns out that the head problem was pretty damn common, though there was no internet to discover that at the time. ... So. yeah I jest. And based on the Cayenne forum, Schwarzenbauer is a jerk.

I guess I read the article differently. I thought it had to do more with Porsche's management direction and a vision for the company's future as compared to BMW's direction. It's funny that so many Porsche owners have blasted the Cayenne and the proposed Panamera on this board but quickly jump to the company's defense when compared with another car. It's not a 993 versus M3 issue IMO. In fact, other than the SUV's I don't even consider Porsche and BMW as competing for the same buyer; two differnt products. There is not a current BMW that comes close to handling or braking like a Porsche.

But from a management perspective, either the current managment direction for Porsche is right or it's not. From a financial standpoint, it's hard to question Porsche's direction. Whether that profitability will continue in the future, I'll wait and see. Personally, I love both marquees but still hate the Bangle designs. The e39 was the last of the classic look BMW's in my opinion as was the 993 for Porsche. That's why I choose to keep those two models.

AMEN BROTHER!!! Right there with you literally with the 993 and the E39 M5. I love both of them too. I also like the last model of the M3, M5 and a few others. I just picked up a 1999 E36 M3 cabriolet because I think it's better looking than any of the ones after it. Slower and less powerful, but what a great profile that car has with the top down!!

the Better Half has an '07 X5 4.8L. Great car. Even better motor.

Up at altitude where we live now, it has much more grunt and response than the 993s.
(Of course nothing handles like a 993 M030) and the sound of the flat 6 off the canyon walls, heaven

Hey Paul! Man I still love it like no other. In case you haven't noticed I have bought two MORE red cars since I bought this one (the M5 and the M3). I think you finally helped me admit to my addiction...HA HA LOL!!

Car has been absolutely flawless and perfect, altough it's still a garage queen. Part of me still wishes I had all of those mods you had done to yours, but this one is pretty damn fast anyway.

I actually left you a message on another post trying to remember if it was you that I had so many discussions with. Have you have traded cars at least twice since then? You got a 996 GT3 first and now a 997 GT3? And all those others toys too..it appears we have similar addictions just different in color.

Did you end up moving? I thought you were thinking heavily about moving or something...memory must be fading.

Mike the 4.8L is a GREAT Motor. I have a condo at 8000 feet. It goes up the grade from 5000 to 8000 almost as good as my chevy Diesel.

Robert I see you have the 2 red BMWS yes our addictions or similar!! Marc in AK got my Twin TUrbo and has taken care of it like a baby.
Yes I had a red 996 GT3 heavily modded but it was not like a 993. I loved driving the 996 but I missed the looks of the 993 terribly. So when the 997 GT3 came out I said WOAH!!!! or was it WOOO HOOOO!!!
what ever it looks like a 993 GT3!!!!! AND ITS SO GOOOOOOOODD!!!! I am pretty sure I am at the end of the line of my 911 collection .........till the MKII 997 GT3 comes out!!! I just flat love the GT3. I put a muffler bypass on it and it sounds like a CUP car!!!! SO goood!!!

I bought a place in Mammoth but I did not move there yet. We are going up there this weekend. I love it up there. Life is good and my X5 is very GOOD My wifes Z4M is very good too!!!
