Man, I don't know very many people that enjoy cruising at 4000rpm. Talk about noisy. And if 2800rpm is lugging a motor, thats pretty embarassing.

Cruising at 4k sounds great. I frequently drive from the Bay Area to Long Beach at 4k. The engine sounds so great that I only use the radio to get LA traffic, and I never get drowsy. At 4k I feel at one with the car...

I just used 6th briefly so it doesn't get lonely today on the highway around 90 but usually use 5th at around 80.

Even at 85mph, the RPM's are so low on 6th gear that I keep it on 5th. 100 mph and over...then I go to 6th. This is off course at the track....

since darrin did my lpmms on the 97C2 its 4k revs most of the time., LOve it! But in the Boxter steady state with tiptronic in manual, the diff in fuel consumption when i zeroed the computer is amazing [increased] if you go down one gear.
Im told pumping loss on a normally asp. engine is 10-20%, and pumping loss increases with revs. that said, i love it over 3k, but use 6th >2750 rpm. I marked the tach like in the airplane, and try to keep the needle above 2750-2800.ds

I read somewhere in one of my old Porsche magazines from the mid 90's that the gas mileage drops 50% when cruising at 4000RPM's vs 2200RPM's on the freeway.
