ANYTHING NEW ON THE MOBIL 1 FRONT?

The Castrol TWS I had here recently for a customer was SJ rated (say 6 months ago), if that's worth anything. I'm familiar with the other variants, but have never seen nor used them.

i assume this thread was reinvigorated due to the article about updates from porsche regarding recommended oils. am i correct the consensus here believes (regardless of the porsche factory recommendations) that 0w40 mobil1 should probably NOT be used unless in very warm areas (like FLA, TX maybe?).

oops....i do have it bassakwards. anyway, the article in panorama says the factory is now saying m1 0w40 (along w/helix ultra 5w40) is the approved oil for 95-98 993s. most confusing.

I'm looking at this differently. Weight/viscosity v. temperature is one factor but, more importantly, the additive package is another. We're talking about 10+ year-old vehicles here and Porsche has to recommend oils that are in keeping with the politically correct thing to do. Respected engineers and engine builders warn that, without the proper additive packages, premature wear will occur in older engines that required them. Our vehicles are out of warranty, hence, it's up to us to make an informed decision.

Personally I would stick with Steve and Charles' recommendations of (I think) 15w40 or higher but if you want to stay within Porsche's recommendations don't go below the 5w40. JMHO

I just had my oil and filters changed by John Walker in Seattle (it could almost be a museum with all the stuff he's gathered over the years). He recommended Mobil1 15-50 with half a bottle of Comp Cam. Comp Can appears to have additional ZDDP, he said "the whole bottle would be too much".

Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 is specifically designed to maximize horsepower during race conditions. Mobil 1 Racing 0W-30 is a very versatile racing oil developed for a wide variety of race engines and racing applications.
Mobil 1 fully synthetic race-proven technology is engineered to deliver performance and protection for some of the most demanding race conditions, include circle track, drag, sprint and road racing.
Both Mobil 1 Racing oil viscosities:
Offer boosted levels of anti-wear protection (nominal phosphorus level of 1800 ppm) well beyond those of typical automotive engine oils.
Are recommended for a wide range of race engine applications, including highly loaded flat tappet designs.
Provide exceptional high-temperature protection in high rpm engine operation, even at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C).
Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for street use.
