Looking to buy a 993 from a dealer out east.

Dealer I am talking to says they HAVE all the service records for a car and they "look great", but says that due to privacy laws they can not share or give me any of them.

Does that sound fishy?

No. I've heard it from other dealers and others have posted the same here. However, you might be able to find one who will do it.

Same thing here when I bought my 993 - Local car bought new at MCL and later only serviced at Weissach - I asked for the service records but same thing - the privacy law applies! The only way around it if you can locate the previous owners and ask them to sign a release form for the info from the dealers/service shops

I don't think it is unreasonable for the dealer not to give any "Tom, Dick or Harry" access to a customer's service records.

Why should they do that? Whose business is it what someone is spending to have work done on their car.

A good PPI should tell you most of what you need to know. And, if the seller doesn't have the records, or denies you access to them, the price you offer should reflect that.

Yes, they are not obligated to reveal service records, but they should be able to let you know of recalls performed.

Why? If you are not the owner of the car, or a prospective buyer (from them), what do they owe you?

They owe me nothing... I'm just passing on what I was told by the local dealer when I was researching the purchase of my car.

On the topic at hand, you don't even need the dealer to tell you if the recalls have been performed--you can call 1-800-PORSCHE and ask them. They will run the VIN, tell you of any outstanding recalls, and the original options that came on that particular car.

Not at all. (This is probably attributable to the cultural difference between living in Hawaii and the Northeast. LOL)

Just having a hard time understanding why a dealer should be expected to provide this information to someone off the street who is looking to buy a car from a third party-- that is, which the dealer isn't even selling.

I think it just takes a little social engineering. I got the records on a couple of cars without any problems. The dealer knows me and I am a customer so it wasn't a big deal. However this is no substitute for a good PPI. It just give you an idea of what has / hasn't been done.

You're probably more right than you realize.

Based on what I have read on Rennlist over the years, I think jaholmes has it about right. For the most part, most dealers will not provide service records to prospective buyers, but some can be "persuaded". The recalls are a matter of corporate knowledge and most dealers will provide that info on request. Jeff's post supports that the recall info is pretty much at Porsche's discretion.
