94' 964 3.6 into a 95 993?

A good mechanic should have no trouble with the swap. However, can you hold out for a proper 993 mill? The 964 3.6 is a nice motor, but most people don't put in an engine with less horsepower.
Good luck.

The market value for a used 964 motor isn't much less than a used non-varioram 993 motor. Sell it to a early car guy looking for a swap and buy the right motor for your car. The extra $k or two will easily be recouped when you sell the car.

I agree with Mark (fancy that!), but were not the early-build '95 motors essentially the same as the latest 964 motors?
If not, what are the actual differences?

There are some that value the 964 crank for it's larger bearing area for track use.
Both 964 and '95 993 use 55pin DMEs and engine wiring harness which makes the swap pretty easy. Of course chip swap is called for too.
Biggest difference wrt a swap is the fuel metering; mechanical barn door on 964 and hot wire on 993

Another issue wrt to a t/p, right side 964 exhaust studs are 90* out of alignment w/ 993 exhaust flange holes. 993 heads have dual pattern holes for the studs and can go either way, 964 heads do not
