Default I'm an idiot, I'm an idiot, I'm an idiot ....

So it's the end of a long week and I'm picking up my 4 year old. Pull over on the left side of the street and then start to back up. Didn't think I was very close, but all of a sudden I hear .. well, you all know what I hear.

Idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot ....

Nice hefty curb rash. Of course it's longer than it should be because IDIOT didn't stop right away.

So I've ordered some Einszett Primer Haftgrund, Einszett Silver Silber Spray Paint and Wurth European Blend Lacquer Clear Gloss from Pelican. Then I'll get some filler and sandpaper and hope that the NASA method works for me.

I've heard that the Wurth paint didn't match that well and wonder if the Einszett is better (even though they say it's the same as the Wurth).

http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/w...uff-repair.htm

I'll document my DIY when the paint comes ....

Bummer. But it could have been a lot worse! Good luck with the DIY.

FYI, my local wheel refinisher will completely re-do a wheel for $125 and they offer overnight service.

Ouch. I had trouble getting the Wurth to match. Our biggest problem here in NorCal is it's too cold to paint.

Wurth does not match at all. Call up some of the car dealer around (porsche, bmw etc) and ask if they have a guy that does airbrush touchups of wheels. They can make it look like it never happened for 50-75 dollars.

Patrick,
Do you have any information to share on how you finished your wheels? I like the contrast.

Thats a basic spacey mistake. If you want idiocy, try this:
A certain 993 owner with a white Targa whose screen name starts with an "A", who I know intimately, decides to refinish an antique piece of furniture. He applies the paint stripper outside the garage and then scrubs a little with a piece of fine steel wool. The steel wool gets clogged so he walks into the garage with paint stripper on his gloves to get another piece of steel wool. Yes, you guessed it, as he walks behind his car, he drips a large glop of stripper on the rear bumper of his otherwise great paint condition 993 . The worst thing is he doesn't notice it until the next day, so it had all the time in the world to eat into the paint.

Mea culpa #3
Yesterday I went into the garage, putzed around a bit and then I got into my car and backed out of the garage. Oops. Forgot to open the garage door! Fortunately I got on the brake immediately as I heard the wood cracking. No major damage to the car or the door.

Don't mean to speak for Patrick, but I believe they were powder-coated a "Hyper silver". I know because I plan to have mine done later after I get my own set of MY02 wheels. It's also in his signature.

You are not the only one: I rashed my left rear the first week I had my first 993. I was not accustomed to the wider rear end on the 993 and scraped it against a curb in the Metro parking building as I was turning out of my spot. I was bummed...

Yep, that is right. It has a bit of a metallic finish to it. I simply love it.

A-ha! So that's the real story! You told me that the scrapes happened when Hurley Haywood was driving a demo 993 at Daytona and had a slight shunt with a curb in the paddock. I never quite understood how you came to own the wheel.

j/k It's doing fine in my shop.

Patrick,
They look great. Would you say that the finish has a slight 'smokey' look? I've always thought my 18" twists look too much like the silver of my car.

+1
I think these are the same guys that Mayo sent my wheel to get refinished prior to new tires and the truck ride to Seattle. JT's slight scuff was erase so completely that you can't even tell which wheel it was.

don't worry about it at all- better to curb a wheel than space out in traffic and do body damage, or bump into a mailbox, etc. I spun my car a few years ago, scratched up the wheels a bit, but I never fixed them- just left it as a reminder not to be a dumbass anymore!

now I go to the track in my other one, and could care less how much bug gut or dust is on the car, I've even scraped the hell out of the turbo s chin spoiler. just never ever ever do damage to the rear fender/wheel well. that's not a DIY job.
