Guys -
I'm at a turning point with my 993. I'm approaching the need for a clutch/flywheel, and perhaps shocks on my M030 suspension. I'm getting quotes between $3500 and $4500 for the work. The car is immaculate with 69k miles on it and Iris Blue Metallic with sport package.
I'm also driving a '00 528iT with sport package and 18" wheels with 83k on it.
I'm considering 1 of 2 options.
1 - sell the 528 to fund the clutch/suspension on the 993. Make the 993 the daily driver, and put the rest of the cash in the bank.
or
2 - sell them both and buy a '05 M3 coupe or convertible
Have any of you owned both vehicles, and could provide some experiences/thoughts?
I do realize this a 993 board, and can imagine some of the responses.
I appreciate your thoughts.

Search the recent threads and you will see much discussion on the pros and cons of trading a 993 for an E46 M3.
For me the choice would be easy: daily drive the 993. I enjoy my drive every day because I get to drive the 993. It's a car to enjoy at any speed and nearly any conditions - but that's me.
Since this decision appears to be based on some financial considerations, I would look at this aspect too. Keeping the 993 will likely be much cheaper in terms of maintenance and depreciation over the long run. The tax you will pay and never get back on the '05 M3 will just about pay for the repairs to the 993.
You really need to spend some time in both cars to see which one you prefer. I would really like an E46 M3 and loved my E36 M3 but not enough to get rid of the 993. This car always surprises me when I'm driving and I think "I really really like this car". Even thought that while driving through last weeks rain storm, when taking two kids and my dad on a very spirited New Years day drive through the mountains, and when commuting to work yesterday. The '98 and older 911s have a soul that I have yet to experience in any other car I have owned.
Good luck!

Depends on how much joy and happiness your 993 gives you. If it is an item that helps you balances your life then you should do what you need to the car and keep it on the road. The 993 is not a low cost maintenance car, it will require some budget. If you need the extra cash to keep the 993 on the road, then you could sell the BMW and use the left over money to buy a cheaper car.

Keep the 993... sell the 5-series and use the proceeds to buy a beat-up Honda Accord or Toyota for your daily driver. Use the leftover $$ to mod-up the 993 and cover repairs.

I just went through a similar decision process, recently. I (wife and young boy) have a Prius (wife's car), Subaru wagon and my '95 993 (40K miles). I was feeling the urge to simplify and sell the 993 and Subaru and buy a mini cooper. My reasoning at the time was:
- avoid higher maintenance costs and additional insurance in the next 10-15 years
- Although the 993 benefits from having the subabru when I drive in bad weather, I no longer want 3 cars
- I still have the need for a fun and trackable car.
I plugged in some numbers in a spreadsheet for 3 scenerios (1. keep 3 cars, 2. keep the Prius & 993, 3. Keep the Prius and buy a used mini).
The savings for the least cost scenerio (mini/Prius) where not enough to out weigh the enjoyment of my 993. So, I'm going with the scenerio 2.
I still have to come to grips with making my 993 a daily driver. However, I'm fairly confident that I would regret selling my 993. I haven't sold the Subaru , yet.
Good luck and perhaps wait a month or two before deciding.

Don't sell your 993. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. You will 'always' regret not having a Porsche. Of course there are other cars out there that are faster/newer/nicer/posh but the 993 is really special. If you enjoy the car and can weather the maintenance storms then you should keep it and get an inexpensive beater car.
How do I know? I had a 993 which I miss and would love to buy back my first 911. I sold it, because our first child, for an 2002 M3 and shortly thereafter I immediately began looking for another 911. Sold the M3 bought another 993. Sold the 993 for an M5 because we have two kids now. I still want another 993! Shopped the 997s because they are bigger but not emotionally tied to it.
IMO, as a parent of two, if your budget will permit it in the garage and your lifestyle (more importantly the kids) can tolerate the car then keep the 993.

I have a 993TT and an E46 M3.
you live north of Boston....lots of snow, many months.
I live in Seattle, not so much snow, but rain lots of times, and when there's 0.25 of an inch of snow, the world stops.
I would recommend that you look into a Subaru Impreza, perhaps WRX, and trade you 5-series in for that. You will be happy through the wet and snowy seasons. All Subarus are AWD.
I have another Subie that my wife drives, and I am planning to trade in my M3 or sell sometime to get a Subaru as a daily driver.
KEEP the 993!!
