Having driven from Phoenix to Bangor and Bangor to Laredo in the last 17 months, bring your MP3 player or discs if old school. My car is lowered and fairly stiff so it was not a joy after the first 8 hours of driving each day-maybe that is my "old school" body though. Also, be ready to have a great time and get lots of looks from other drivers.

The only problem I had was one of the rear light's screws came undone-15 second repair at a gas stop and it was fixed. Other then that the car was bullet proof and a pleasure.

Have fun,

Al

If you are driving north on I-77 at the NC / VA line and need to take a break, we can have a warm fire, some hot food, and garage space for the car. Overnight accommodations are also available.

The other tips are great, but start here.

All great tips but I would add some Qwik Detailer and some micro fiber towels to wipe down the car at the end of the day. An extra couple of window lift switches, water and a Zagat guide or some other restaurant guide to find the good food. And some lemons to suck on so that you can wipe that sh@t eating grin off your face at the end of the day.

You are going to have so much fun.

As an afterthought, even with a Valentine-one I'd turn it off and watch the speed while traveling through Virginia. Radar detectors are illegal in VA. The NC and VA LEOs have a tendency to hang out at the state line.

While I'm not sure what the "southern route" is to a Bostonian, avoid I-85 to I-95. I-77 to I-81 is a much easier drive.

Buy a GPS system. My Garmin has made maps obsolete.

Snow chains.

Oh, and huge +1 on the Garmin (I use a Nuvi).

Radar detector is essential and yes, even in VA. My Escort 8500 X50 saved me no fewer than three times yesterday. Only a very few state police cars, and no locals, have the Spectre RD detector. So if you're smart about mounting your V1 and don't slam your brakes on at night, you'll sail through VA without a ticket. FWIW, it's still cheaper to get caught with a RD than the cheapest speeding ticket costs here and VA no longer confiscates them. I always carry one of my SIG Sauers in the car too. I use the P220 in .45 ACP for long and motorcycle trips. .357SIG is better for penetrating heavy winter clothing though.

I like to put a nice thick coat of wax on the nose for easy clean-up of bugs etc when you get where you are going. Make sure you have plenty of fluid in the windshield wash tank. Ice scraper?

Man you people are just the best! I can't thank you all enough for the generous sharing of information. I've made a bunch of notes, have ordered a spare DME relay, borrowed the Garmin for the trip, and will stop for many of other other assorted items when I get out to CA. I'm also going to attempt to temporarily hook up my Sirius radio -which I'm addicted to. I'm a little concerned about airport security with all the electronic gadgets, but I hope if I show them the Mass plate and explain what I'm up to there will be no troubles.

Since I'll be running at least 3 cigarette lighter gadgets at once I'm going to need a spitter. Ideally I'd like to get one with a USB port like this:

Any of you have any experience with this kind of thing? If so I'm all ears. Otherwise I'm truly thankful to all of you for the help. I'll be in touch again before leaving!

Talking Road Trip

My road trip modus operandi is as follows:

1. Service car at least a few hundred miles prior to departure.

2. Service your of crew of non designated drivers one day prior to departure (two card carrying members of the will detail cool Porsche for less than $15 in beer alliance).

3. Service and then load a seriously attractive woman who digs you with or without the rig (every day including the day of departure and at each opportunity thereafter).

4. Don't leave home without plastic, "fresh rubber" and a digital camera.

5. Document the lot of it for posterity and 58K of your closest friends. Okay maybe just you unless you want to take all of your following trips alone......

By the time the list is complete, the poor guy will be towing a U-haul trailer.
