Essentials for cross country trip???
Happy New Year to all,
I'm a new 993 owner and will be soon picking up the car and driving back to Boston via the southern US route. Are there any essentials that you experienced owners would recommend that I bring with me (besides a sense of humor)?
I'll have brand new tires on the car, my Valentine One, GPS, and will pick up some Mobil 1. Are there spare parts or tools that I should have on board?
As always any advice will be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Matt - Boston

Fuses, DME relay, jumper cables or jump box, charger for you cell phone and AAA card.
Oh yeah, if it's a cab, make sure you have a socket wrench (I think size 20 or 22) in case your cab top fails and you need to manually raise it (ask me how I know). Also, make sure you know how to program the key fob or carry both sets with you at all times (ask me how I know).

I-pod, ice chest, a cell phone & the AAA card. DIY is for the comfort of home!
(Actually, the DME relay and fuses are good things to always have in the glove box)

New belts and all of the tools to change them. Best would be to change them 500 miles before leaving to ensure the belts are adjusted correctly. They do relax a little. Also to allow you to know what tools are really required to do the job on the side of the road.
DME relay as mentioned above. AAA card and digi camera to document the trip.

Matt...
If you're coming thru Richmond, VA let me know if you'd like to make a pit stop. I'd be more than happy to take you to lunch and congratulate you on your 993. Congrats ! Office-direct 804.569.1829

Matt,
Bring a camera and document the ride, it should be a great experience. Be sure to check out the spare and the compressor before you depart. Enjoy the ride....

AAA, indeed!!!
Be certain you are a AAA Premier Member... a few bucks more, but worth the added features.
Just have the car serviced before you go....telling them that you are going on a long trip and to pay attention to the belts. Get all fresh fluids, including brake fluid, why not?
DME....if for some reason you go to fire up the car, and it turns over and wont start, the DME relay may be the culprit. Learn where the DME relay is located...it's location is noted in the owners manual.
Flashlight...I love my new LED Maglite, very bright. If I were driving across country and were paranoid (Who me?) I'd also bring my Glock 9mm....but that is sketchy advice...don't listen to me.

Beef jerky and a bag of Twizzlers.
And make sure the air compressor works - if you do need the spare, it would suck not to be able to blow it up. To that end, make sure you've got the wheel lock....
Safe journey,

I just finished a cross country dive to the east coast from cali in June and back in Nov.. Most of the above things are very good recommendations.. I'd add:
lots of freezer zip-lock bags for org..
plus a damp washcloth in one, to clean up after eating in the car..
Maybe a spray bottle of some sort of glass cleaner for the outside windshield..
A flask with some good hooch.. (for post-drive activities)
A few books downloaded from Audible.com
The Valentine1
A thermos for coffee..
A breaker bar and a proper 17mm socket to remove the wheels if the tool kit is missing..

The only thing I'll add to all of the above is that you should verify that the contents of the tool kit are there, that the compressor works, and that the spare tire is in usable condition.
