Updating the rear suspension to 1996 specs is an utter waste of money, again, iMHO. A few guys on the board have experienced the alleged and dreaded 1995 tail wag, a problem that was remedied by installing ERP bearings in the rear. I have never had crazy or dangerous yaw issues with my 1995 car. I completely respect Joel Reiser's experience and skill, but there are just too many 1995 993's that are being raced or tracked that have not had problems regarding a rear end stability as it pertains to suspension geometry. Sloppy rubber bushings, yes; geometry, no.

Mark, after much research and looking at the cost of replacing the rear parts w/ 96+ parts or RS parts I replaced the rear bushings w/ Weltmeister/ERP bushings and had the car aligned and haven't looked back.

Pat, you were the person I had thought of who had experienced issues that were ameliorated by replacing the bushings with bearings. I thought they were ERP's

You guys already figured it out, but you can remove the air injection system.

Less brain equals less survival instincts, I suppose. As I get dumber every year, maybe I'll get faster.

I'm going to be doing DE's with my 993 (haven't gotten it on the track yet), and here's my basic budget:

$1K Shabby 17" cup wheels & track tires
$750 DAS roll bar (found a perfect used one)
??? Seats and sliders (looking for good used PP's, not likely. Already have harnesses)

My car came from the PO with PSS9's. All told, I'll probably be able to put it on the track and have fun with it for about $3K in mods. I've already put on the RS heater tube, cat bypasses, manual oil cooler fan switch, and pulled some weight off of it. I'm sure it won't be long before TRG sways will go on the car as well.

If you're DE'ing a 993, there really aren't that many mods that you *have* to do to make the car fun and safe on the track. I lucked out in finding a car that already had a decent suspension on it.

Fabspeeds. Love how they sound, but they hang below the rear bumper something awful.

My main motivation to build a track 993 is to have fun, yet safe 911 to toss around on the track.
I'm currently tracking my GT3 and god forbid I mash it to the wall, I'm out of $70k.
Therefore I'm looking into getting something a bit cheaper so I can have a little equity sitting in my bank account just in case I happen to wreck the car on the track.

BMW's, boxters, 944's, Miatas etc. just won't cut it because I want an 911.
An early 996 would probably give the most bang for the buck but after owning and tracking the the GT3, they just won't appeal to me.
Sooner or later I would be building a wannabe GT3 anyway and at that point I would've been better of keeping the GT.

Like many people said, there are a lot of good deals out there (already prepped 993's). I'm not looking to going racing anytime soon either so that will give me a lot more flexibility when choosing the car and mods.

I just wanted to get a general idea on how much each item that the car needs will cost.
I agree that the 996 may be a step back and end up a pseudo GT3. It's tough to get over "it's not a 911." It's not like people won't like you if your not driving a 911. Another option is to just get track insurance for your GT3. If you stuff it, you are covered.

Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough but I have not seen many 993 track prepped.

Really? Guess it depends on your definition of "many" and your definition of "track prepped". I think there are quite a few 993 track cars that started out life as street cars, at least here on the east coast, and can easily count out approximately eight or so cars in our region. My definition of track-prepped is having a roll bar or cage and either camber plates/monoballs, stiff suspension and race seats or some combination thereof. It's like art and pornography; I know it when I see it.

<edit> Added about ten more people to the lists. Took off Rod Johnson.

DE 993's:
Ken Shahoian
Hank Cohn
Petu aka Flying Finn
Rick Betterley
Chuck Price
Tom Trew
Pat aka Patfat
Rob aka AC993C2S
Don Plumley
David Gast
Ralf Brueckner
Plus at least two other cars in our region whose drivers' names I do not know

Race 993's:
Mark Lee
Todd Bernard
Sam Nikoomanesh
Skip Boykin
Danny J
Tim Holt
Jamie Levy
George Abdalla
Raymond Lum
Brent Johnson
Pete Debusmann
Rob King
Bob Turgeon
Wes Taylor
Dave Hinkle
Dennis O'Keefe
Jack Borys
Joe Lash
Martin Bour
Sasha Clark
Christian Maloof
ex-Greg Fishman car
ex-Bill Walczak car (stock, street car turned into C class car, then turned into GT2R car)
ex-Mac McGhee car
ex-Jim Breakey car

These lists are just the 993 club race drivers that I can think of, as well as the 993 DE guys who I know or know of. I'm sure there are a ton more our there who never post on Rennlist.

JUha,

I haven't read all of the posts, but based on your costs on page 1, you will need well over $2k for a suspension setup that is even reasonable for the track. I would say a minimum is PSS9s w/ RS or other adjustable sway bars. Additionally, you need to add in 1.5-2.5k for auxiliary oil cooling which will be needed.

I'm going to be starting this effort shortly. My situation is that I already own almost everything since I pulled it off my C4S and just need to put it on the C2 donor car, so good luck.
