Unhappy 993 hinge

Hi

Is it possible to carefully remove and replace the bottom hinge door pin
whilst the door is on the car. It has wear in it and the centre part of the hinge has movement in it.
Will I need an oversized pin?

Thanks again

Colin

You need to drive the pin upwards to get it out. I made up a tool for my 83SC to do this, I also rebushed the hinges (you can buy bushings and new pins). The bushings are made of a bronze material that does wear if they are not oiled. Anyways, I have not done a 993 hinge but it does look the same.

I used a sliding hammer, a piece of 3/4" ready rod and a cupped end welded on the ready rod. You insert the rod between the door and frame, put the cup on the bottom of the pin and slide the hammer to give an upward force. Its documented in the older 911 manuals but not in the recent shop guide.

Cheers,

Mike

Thumbs up Hinge help

Thanks Mike
Do you have to ream/drill out the hinge parts to fit the bronze bushes and new pin? Did you get these parts from a main dealer?
What is a ready rod.. sorry to sound dumb!
Last question can this all be done without taking the door off?

Thanks again mike

Yes, I seem to remember it was a 8mm reamer/drill that I used. It was about 8-9 yeas ago so I am not sure. The bushings/pins were obtained from the dealer.

Pin part number : 901 531 305 20
Bushing part number : 901 531 311 20

These are the same on the 993 according to the parts guide.

Ready rod is just threaded rod...I used it as a way to build a sliding hammer.

You will have to take the hinges off the pillar. If you do it one at a time you can support the door and not worry about totally removing the door.

Cheers,

Mike

Default unhinged

Mike
Thanks for this info your a star!
Did you ream both sides of the hinge? -The piece that fits on the A post with two prongs for the pin to go throughand the piece attached to the door with one prong for the pin to go through? Only its the piece on the door that is worn, I am really nervous about tackling this job.....

Thanks again

The bushings are only on the side that pivots on the pin. Swing open the door and look. I seem to remember its on the door side which makes the reaming no fun.

If you are nervous get a body shop to do the repair...its easy to scratch the paint when removing the pins and its easy to screw up the reaming. Of course, the bushings should be cheap so you can always just do a few until you get it right.

If you do this DIY post the pictures.

Cheers,

Mike
