I used Savograns Strypeeze. That coating is really tough. the Strypeeze did it in a few applications, but I have used that Strypeeze for years and have never found a coating that took that too as long to lift as what they put on the fan.
I have a syphon-blast cabinet, which is not that powerful, and the glass bead was taking forever. Bouncing off of it most of the time. The chemical way took about an hour.

Its available at hardware stores, I don't think Home Depot carries it. Semi-paste stuff.

The fan is indeed magnesium.
If my obsession with all parts Porsche is in question, take a look HERE. Especially post #67...
After sourcing a used fan (thanks Neil), I looked at it for a few minutes, then decided to bury a 993 clock smack dab in the middle. A friend of a friend, with an amazing machine shop in his basement, took care of the sizing concerns. Next step - powder coat or rattle can?

I took the fan to a very reputable powder coater and was told that they've coated these fans in the past, but that the porous nature of magnesium tends to cause bubbles under the coating once it's baked. That, or air in the pockets will make the coating 'pop'.
Considering the price, and the potential for failure, I've decided to paint it at home. Results to follow.

Mark,
I've seen a few polished examples on Pelican - and they do look nice. I'm just not in the mood to spend hours polishing, only to have the mag dull again in time. From what I've read, clearcoating a polished fan will noticeably reduce the lustre.
Prime, paint & clearcoat. Wire it up, and hang the damn thing on the wall.

Yeah, a room with bulletproof vest and tasers . . .
BTW, sorry for the OT, but I used to have a black 1984 VW Rabbit GTI with an Autopower roll bar, Koni shocks, Neuspeed lowering springs and silver BBS RA(?) wheels, very similar to yours. I loved how that car handled.
