Default Making the 993 sounds like a 911!

One thing with the 993 is that it doesn't sound like a 964 or 911. the 993 has much less of the mechanical noises of the earlier car, especially in the cabin.

I have the 1.5 LPMM mod and drilled intake. That improve the intake + exhaust note, but don't give the wonderful mechanical noises of the earlier cars.

Then....the other day, I removed the rear seat deck, rear seat back, and associated hardware in an effort to reduce weight. I left the rear deck exposed, but have the appbiz carpet on order. Guess what, OMG, the car sounded GREAT!!! I can hear the mechanical ticks and whirls of a proper air cooled engine.

The rear deck has a layer of 1 inch thick insulation which blocks out most of the engine noise, but not enough to block out the knockings of the lwt flywheel. It also contributes to the rattles in the car as the top of the rear deck is not really secured to anything.

So now, I have a lighter, better sounding car!!! Try it, if you don't like it, you can put it back in. Takes just 5 minutes to do.

If you really like aircooled noise why don't you pull the engine compartment insulation out and install solid transmission & engine mounts?......ZP44

In my 964, I replaced the engine compartment insulation with a thinner insulation. It works well. But to properly do the job, I would have to drop the engine. I want to remove the rear deck lid anyway to save weight. The sound coming through is a bonus. I don't even listen to the radio now.

I am staying away from the RS engine + tranny mounts. They transmit rattles & vibrations to the cabin instead of the air cooled mechanical noises.

A set of solid lifters would do the trick .... but then, there's that fun issue of adjusting valve lash - which would make it a 'real' 911

Enjoy the noise! I took out that pad too, and it's a great and free mod! I'm surprised more folks don't do this, but I guess most are mainly trying to impress the neighbors with louder cans??

Also I discoverd on my long trip that having some bags and coats in the rear cabin tone the sounds back down to near-stock levels. In case you have a significant other with you who doesn't appreciate the air-cooled music.

Now that I think about it, it is the 1" insulation that is taped to the rear deck that is blocking the engine sound.

So, if you want a stock appearance, you can take out the insulation and put back in the deck. I think it's 1 piece and will come off easily, it can be put back in at a later time.

I am looking to lighten my car so the deck is going to stay you.

As for the solid lifter, I had my share of adjusting valves. Been there, done that, don't wanna do it again.....well...maybe for a 965 turbo....or a 3.8. Just maybe.

Atttached is a pic of how I did it. Once the rear deck is out, you remove the insulation pad that is on the other side of the deck.

I agree, I don't have sound deadening inside the cockpit (nor back seats, deck etc.) and I also removed the engine bay insulation. Sounds much better!

Thanks for the pic Axl , I'm after more sound than I've been getting from my stock 993 .. I guess I was a bit spoilt with my PSE on the 996 I had , it really was the doggies nuts.
I must look at my deck again tomorrow , I assumed it'd involve working around rear speakers , wiper , and most imporstany losing the rear seats (my 7 and 4 year olds would have something to say about that!)

Shamrock,

I think you can take the deck out and remove the insulation. Then, reinstalling the deck. That would probably give the same affect without you having to sacrifice anything.

What is involved to remove the seatbelts? I would like to remove the rear seats but i don't want to redo the carpet so I guess I'll just take the belts out.

Just unbolt them. I don't recall any 'tricks' or tools other than my standard socket set. The seat backs also are easily removed.
