Default Engine belly pan TSB?

I have been told that there may be a service bulletin from Porsche that recommends the permanent removal of the engine belly pan in the interest of saving the valve guides. The theory here is additional cooling to the heads to prolong the life of the components. Any truth to this?

If you get six engine trays together, and are a half decent welder, you can fab yourself a nice composter...

With 2900+ posts and a member since 2003, you are definitely not new to RL, but judging by that question, you must be new to the 993 forum. Don't let everyone bust your chops too much, but this is a frequently discussed topic, and most here have done the "Engine Tray Delete" mod. Supposedly it was added for Swiss noise regulations, so what have you really lost by deleting it except weight? The fact that you may gain a bit of the wonderful noise emitted by that 3.6 liter flat-6 is a bonus in my opinion. As MarkD suggested, try a search. The results could keep you busy for days.

Some people reinstall them in wintertime to avoid getting salt, snow, and crap onto the engine. Oh wait... you're from San Diego... what snow?

Also, my mechanic suggested if driving a [substantially] lowered 993 in a city environment, in order to protect some of the parts, to reinstall mine... I have, somehow, broken both tips of the two heat control boxes, at $435/piece, that's no bueno. I probably won't reinstall it though:

Not that I want to argue with your mechanic, but I have put mine on and teken it off many times, It's off now. That pan is stong enough for airflow I would not bump anything with it. If you broke the tips now my gues would be you would have broken the tips with the pan on and also damaged the pan.

Again not an expert jsut my .02.

There were never any official Porsche TSB on removing the engne sound tray, however it was recommended by an authority figure Bruce Anderson on the 964 cars, which just carried over on to the 993s.

Interestingly the 996s does not have the engine sound tray. So much for protection and aerodynamics. But of course maybe Porsche was trying to cut back cost on the 996.

I think thats because the water dampens noise and the 996 doesnt have cooling fins to radiate noise. Most certanly also cost cutting measures as well!

I would have to agree. Aren't the tips exposed by the engine tray anyway?

If I remove the engine tray will the increased noise annoy the neighbors when I start-up at 6:00am?

No. There's virtually no noise difference. My suggestion for annoying the neighbors at 6:00AM is cat bypasses and RSR mufflers.

I have always left mine on, I am somehow hoping that it will add to its value someday

I also believe that it may help my engine warm up quicker since most of my drives are shorter??
