+1. I've owned (very briefly) a 996 C2, and had driven a number of 911's - from older 930's to a 996 GT2. It took me all of 20 minutes in a well-preserved 97C2 to know that was the car I preferred hands down. Just feels more solid, looks better, smells better, sounds better, and has a mystique that the 996's just don't hold for me. I could care less about weight, horsepower, etc. I'm not racing the car, just enjoying it as a weekend driver. The enjoyment factor for me is just much higher in the air-cooled variants, of which the 993 is the ultimate expression. When people post asking this question, to me the only valid answer is "drive both and you will soon know which one is for you". To each his own.
