I thought that occurred with the 993. Up until 1995, the cars were handbuilt, the flaws identified, and then hand rebuilt. The Japanese assisted Porsche's implementation of modern production and quality control methods with the 993, except for the engines which were still handbuilt. This lead to the lower cost of the 993's vs the outgoing 964's. As far as what is the best 911, that's easy. It's the one sitting in your garage or driveway. Never met a 911 I didn't like.
One of the first thing the Japs did was to eliminate huge shelves full of parts along the assembly line and implemented more of a "Just in Time" process, which resulted in lower inventory cost. These kinds of changes did, in fact, happen during production of the 993, but had no impact on the design and, ultimately, the finished product. The 993 simply got to the end of the assembly line a little more efficiently.

Don't buy a 911 from auction - you run a huge risk of getting someone else's problem car

You know, I think I agree with you, though.
The 993 is curvy, well respected and influential, but maybe overweight and slow.
The 996 is slimmer, faster, beautiful in her own way, but may throw a phone at you if you act like a ******.
