Default What a difference 17" wheels make

Yesterday I swapped my 18" speedlines to the track car in preparation for an AutoX this weekend. I had to take the cabrio to work, so I mounted the old stock 17" cups with street rubber on. Wow..what a difference! The car with my H&R suspension which I thought was marginal for the street, was so nice and compliant! The 17" wheels made a huge difference in the way the car rides and the suspension now its perfect for street.
I realize that cosmetically the 18's look phenomenal, but I think I will be sticking with the 17's for now on the street car...

Danny...just the reason I went with the 17's when I upgraded wheels. You're right about the looks of your 18's though.

I have to laugh because I am going the opposite direction. I just installed 18s today.

Danny,

That's why I kept with 17" for my humbe base Cayman. Unfortunately, these days, there are a lot more wheel choices in 18s than 17s. I looked high and low and I'm soooo happy I found a set of Speedlines in 17s. The ride is definitely much more compliant for the streets.

I like these much better.
You must have the lightest set of 18" Solid spoke twists around. Mine weigh closer to 26 and 30 lbs.

Danny, I'm going to 17's for the winter and have been looking forward to seeing if there is a major difference. Thanks for the preview.

First thing I did after buying my 993 earlier this year was to replace the 18" turbo twists with 17" cup IIs. My only complaint is that I still gotten off my butt and put the 18s up for sale.

I recently upgraded. Besides the look, I like the additional traction you get with the 18s. But if you are looking for comfort, the 17s are best.

993 James, need some centercaps?

Porsche does not make wheels, but the OEM manufacturer actually did make a factory 17 x 7.5" CupII wheel but it was not available for 911's from Porsche they were for the 968 series.

I know this is fact because I own a pair that have factory markings not aftermarket................ZP44

I only have the two front 17 x 7.5's and they are in Mirage International's storage north of me right now, I'll get the part #'s off them and post them after our current fire situation is resolved and I have highway access again.

When I went from stock suspension/17" cups to pss9/18" I'd expected the ride to be much rougher but it turned out to be not too bad. I even stiffened up the pss9 to 6/6. I think the pzero Nero help quite a bit as they're supposed to be comfortable tires. The big difference was the steering wheel feel and the car didn't feel as "quick" as with 17". Crusing on hwy and high speed sweep is more stable with 18". But look was the main reason for 18" though.

I just put new Michelins on my 17" cup II's so I plan on sticking with them for some time. Since I am strictly
a street driver the 17's just seemed more practical. Also these northeast roads can get pretty rough.

ZombiePorsche44 is correct IIRC. The 17 x 7.5 wide front Cup II's were on the 968 Club Sport I believe. Factory versions are almost as rare as hen's teeth. Maybe were available as an option on regular 968s, which came stock with 16in wheels (I think). Either way, I have the 17 x 7 & 9 Cup IIs on my 993 and 944S. Look good on both. I really like the look of the 996 5 spoke 18's though ! But like others I worry about street use of 18's. Thinking about 17 X 8 1/2 & 10 wheels (Fikse) down the road.

The manufacturer of my OEM Cup II's is Borbet. They may have been other
suppliers...
