Forgive me for the odd comparison request, but I am curious if anyone can offer a first-hand comparison between these two cars. Nicer 993's (particularly C2S, C4S) seem to be priced similarly to non-museum piece 964 Turbos so it got me to wondering. Which would be a more enjoyable car for regular spirited street driving (no track use)? I understand the Turbo will cost more to maintain but also offers much greater upgrade potential. For the sake of arguement, how do they compare stock vs. stock?
The 964 Turbo will be faster and more fun to drive in my experience, despite its hefty weight. Faster on the track too, but I know that's not important in this case. Plus the 964 Turbo is the best looking car ever made. Upgraded, it wouldn't even be a contest. It can be as fast as you want to make it.
I respectfully disagree. The 946T is a nice car, but the 993TT is superior in many ways. Better rear suspension and modern fuel injection are the biggest improvements. Also, less turbo lag. And IMHO the 993TT is better looking.
I am debating almost the same..... Either a 993 C2S or a -94 turbo 3.6. If it wasn't for my widebody -94 speedster - I would go for the T 3.6 - but somehow it is kind of boring have 2 cars with very similar looks.....
I just sold my -90 C4 3.8 with approx 340 hp - awsome car but somewhat heavy
Now - the RUF company here in Norway wants to build me a TPC supercharged 993 2S with lowered compression +++ for a very good price for more like a "show what we can do" car..with claimed 450 bhp....?
But then again the T 3.6 with upgrades (430 hp) is and always will be a collectors item
However - this will be a daily driver except for winthers when my MB G wagen have to do the work - and we all know the speedster is only a good weather car anyways
The only thing is that I have never driven these cars - test drove a - 95 993 C4 for the first time 3 days ago. Liked the handling and AWD better than the 964 - but it lacked lots of power compared to the 3.8 set up - so I know I won't stick to stock anyways
Inputs? I like the raw feel and dislike PS and too much weight ( my speedster is custom built with only 1160 kg on the scale...and you need a kidney belt for downtown driving)

The OP is talking about NA 993's versus 964 turbos.
been looking at 964 turbos, and therefor researching. Stock to stock, the 3.3l cars are not much faster than the 993 NAs, at least reported acceleration runs. The 3.6t is, indeed, quicker. Of course, you can get a lot more power out fo the turbos with some mods, so if that is your cup of tea, there is no contest.
As for looks, I respectfully disagree. The NA 93 is the most beautiful of all Pcars to me. The allure for me of a 3.6t is the "modable" nature and because it is something different. Grass is always greener....
Of course, above the 3.6t for me (just for me, not for everyone) is a GT3, and a modded Cayman (with GT3 engine if possible someday, or ...) is also interesting...
Having owned numerous 993s, and a 3.3 Turbo (a 930, but the drivetrain is essentially unchanged in the 91-92 965) ... for a non-daily driver, I would pick the Turbo and put just a little money into it (K27, better intercooler and exhaust) and it will be a rocket. As Leonard Turner put it when the car was new, it made him understand why the Porsche seats have such high seatbacks, it's to keep your head from falling off when the boost comes on. It's a priceless feeling, raw, powerful, challenging to handle, and completely addictive.
Porsche Turbo ...There is no FREAKIN substitute! ...ok, just a little editorial license
I love my 993, and she is a keeper. But I knew going in that she would be a daily driver so "practicalities" influenced my decision in a very big way (not to mention the 993's gorgeous curves). But if I had to pick one "fun 911" that was not a DD (yet still affordable), the 964 3.6 turbo would be my first choice. Beautiful, sexy, powerful, and a "Porsche Turbo" of which incites immediate passion in any car-lover's soul. It is, IMHO, one of the best marriages of the original-911 look with modern lines that keep the look fresh, even today. If you can find one (made in small numbers), I'd definitely go chek it out, if only to see what the hubbub is all about.
Wow, thank you for all of the input. To be honest, I expected night and day responses when I posted this question on both the 964T and the 993 forums but the opinions ended up very similar. I guess this is what I've always liked about Rennlist--people will give it to you straight even if they aren't extolling the virtues of the car in their own garage.
I've got a few cars to look at and drive but I'll check back in if one of them lands in my garage.
(Alas, I can only wish a 3.6T was in the budget. I may have to watch Bad Boys again just for another taste of it though...)
Kevin
P.S. SAMike, if you can find the end of what must be a very long list, please put me down as a hopeful next owner of your car. Wow! I'll auction a kidney and a half to get in that car.
964 is a great looking car, just that heavy front bumper that ruins it for me. The 993 has a smaller bumper and lighter front end more like the original. 993 all the way for me.
sort of off topic, the 964 has always been one of my favorite Porsches looks-wise. Stunning, modern and still so true in shape to early Turbos.
+2
Just taking the cover off is enough to get the adrenalin going.....then you have the boost. After having several normally aspirated 911's I'm now a believer in the boost. There is just no substitute for the boost! Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the RSA and I have a great time driving my 3.2 Carrera. I just really enjoy the 3.6, it's by far the most fun I have had with a P-car.
