We have two remotes. Mine works well at six feet-the wife's works at what she says is ten feet. Differing methods of measuring I'm sure!
Doesn't that usually work the other way around?

Actually, the range is extended if you hold the remote to your chin. Really. Try it yourself.

2 ft if I'm walking towards it...almost 3 ft if I'm running towards it really really fast.

Mine works best if I point it at the driver's side headlight from about a foot away. And yes, I only have one...

Not much more than 3 ft, even with new battery. Might gain an extra foot at the side windows or directly of the bow. It is a pain....

Think of it as a secruity feature - Thief cant sit in a parking lot with a device to see which cars unlock as you transmit a signal.

The 996's had a TSB about this.

In a nutshell, the antenna for the cars was designed for a different frequency (one that was OK in Europe) than what is used in the US.

According to the TSB, you:
1) Cut off 100mm from the antenna lead
2) Remove 130mm of shielding from the remaining antenna lead (note that's USA specific)

(See TSB 911 (996) 7/04 9662 Binder 9 - Electrical)

Unfortunately I don't see a similar TSB for the 993 (see list here https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/338398-porsche-993-technical-service-bullitens-tsb-s-updated-regularly.html)

I have two fobs, each with new batteries. One works only at less than 10 feet (usually less) and the other works well out to 30-40 feet (sometime more).

Why?

3 feet away on a good day, I have both remotes with fresh batteries and additional batteries in the door compartment, why you ask? the spare batteries are a lesson learned after a tow truck had to bring my wife and I home from a Sunday drive through the country side.(very expensive lesson).
