Anyone out there able to recommend or not a TPC supercharger upgrade and say whether or not the intercooler that is offered is worth the additional $4k or so? Thanks.

This keeps coming up... search for a thread Marlon started ... the title had "slippery slope" in the title... he did lots of research.
I LOVE my TPC supercharger... don't have the intercooler. The first owner had it put in Sept. 2002 at 43,800 miles. I just got her in April with 65,000 miles. From the receipts, I don't see that there has been any problems... she's got some serious giddy up!

I also enjoy my TPC SC, great low-end torque and nice sound to boot. I have not had any problems that I could directly attribute to the SC to date, but I believe it is all about the installation with this system. I have acquired an air-to-water intercooler, but have not installed it yet so I could not tell you if it is worth it. I live in a relatively cool climate (QC, Canada) and I am hesitating to "mess with a good thing" so to speak, since the car runs relatively well and I would like to avoid potential tuning problems that may arise after adding an intercooler...

Guys,
I've had my TPC car now for 60k miles and about 5 years. The only thing I would watch out for is warm engine air in summer being inhaled into the supercharger. When using the scantool it showed the air intake sensor getting quite warm compared to outside temp and thus the ecu retarted the ignition. This then reduced efficiency which resulted in overheating of the cylinders on boost. What was strange was no pinging (where I have a knock monitor) but some power loss and with the same amount of fuel being burnt this meant the heat had to go somewhere. Hence I have had to fabricate a cold air intake. This had a great effect on the air intake temperature in stop start traffic and removed the resultant issues from an overheating engine. From my experience beware without this mod when the outside temperature is above 25C.

Don't laugh its still in development :-) . It also removes the normal TPC bend so improving the intake pressure drop (about 1/2lb at full chat which equates to about 3/4lb on the manifold side) as well as taking in cold air from outside. Lots of cross sectional area means little pressure drop before it goes into the filter. Lots of work on chargecoolers, intercoolers on this kit have got me back to A/W injection on the intake to the supercharger. Don't ask lots of history in there.

Too much heat, potential pinging, and the seventh injector workaround are all reasons I believe the supercharger route will continue to have a mixed image - until those things are addressed properly, most 993 owners won't be comfortable bolting one up, no matter how much fun they are to drive. Just my $.02, and I hope those issues are solved in the near future.

pcar964,
very true but here in Blitty we rarely see much above 20C so its not been a real issue for me. Cold air makes this kit real fun. Now in a warm climate I would think twice. I have also changed my base injectors to a little larger but still use the 7th for minor AFR tweeking which I monitor with an Innovate LC1.

Mark, your cold air intake is a great idea! I have also been working on something similar using the prefab Carbon Dynamic Airbox (CDA), but I have not made much progress and your solution eliminates the elbow, which would be great. How are you dealing with the ISV?
Targagr - I am on the southshore of Mtl, I believe we both know Sam.. Would be happy to meet.

The ISV sits right ontop of the SC and then routed into the rubber connection after the AFM along with the other lines. Its tight but seems to work ok.

The PCA tech inspection is Sat. Oct. 27 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. I'll probably head over there in the morning... 10:00 or so.

By the way, I've not had any problems with heat... this summer we had a couple wicked weeks (102 F) and I never saw my temp gauge go over half way... even in stop and go traffic (which I live in every day to and from work). No pinging either.
My gas mileage isn't so hot, but if I wanted good gas mileage, I would have purchased a hybrid.

I also have a supercharged 993 and must say that I love it, totally transformed the car. I had lots of issues with the split second box and upgraded to the Unichip and have never looked back. Tuning is greatly improved with the unichip and the car runs great! would highly recommend it now.

Just received some photos from TPC (no affiliation) on their new Gen 4 SC. The install price seems a little steep, almost the price of the intercooler addition. Take a look.
