I have one plug wire that I discovered this weekend a plug wire that was taped. It looks cut or worn, but I did not remove the tape to see fearing what I may find
The wire is the center wire going to the plug on the passenger side from the the top of the valve cover. is there a way to disconnect just that small piece of wire and replace it at what seems to be a T connection of some sort or do I need to replace it all the way back to the distributor? I wish I had pics to better explain the location.

I was being a little silly with the "lamp cord" comment. I figured it probably had to do with the amount of current the wire can handle. It just seems like "spark plug wires" for our cars are ridiculously expensive. They sell a Beru set at a certain well known online retailer for over $500. On the other hand, they sell a set for an old Buick for $43 here.

Do both sets of wires not do exactly the same thing? I mean, it just carries the current to cause the plug to spark, right? It's either gonna ignite the gas in the cylinder or it's not.

Is it the same sort of thinking as getting $2500 speaker cables??? I honestly don't get it.

Hello. What's makes the spark plug set expensive for an air cooled Porsche is the resistor end of the cable. The wire and rubber boot distributors ends is irrelevent to the cost of the set. As long the resistor boot end is not damaged or burned you can rebuild them at the price of a Buick set. This is the reason why the factory made available the screw in un-crimped threaded male ends for those particular cable. Next time you change your cable, lubricate inside the 90 degree overlapped rubber end from the boot and unscrew the wire carefully, you will see the crimped male treaded end on the cable, therefore you can replace the cable from your existing boot. Those Germans are very clever. Cheers.

LOL - this was one of my first 'sticker shock' issues w/the 993. The vertex price is terrific since Sunset wants aobut 475 for complete factory set including distro cap wires. I still have not replaced them...

Sorry to keep bringing this up but I can't seem to get the link to work to send off an email. Is there a web address or a phone number that I can get? Thanks again for the help.

As long as the plugs are in good shape, you can save a few dollars by buying just the wires.
If you have to buy a few plugs at $38 each, the cost advantage quickly dissipates.
