993 plug wires

O.K. where is the best deal on plug wires. I have found them for as little as $500.00 from World Pac for a new factory set but, I still can't believe they cost so much there has to be a better deal or better wires for that price. By the way I am looking for a 96' C2

I will follow this thread with GREAT interest :)
Thanks

Beru $389 at Vertex: http://www.vertexauto.com/ListItems/...al/Page/1.aspx
$406 at Autohaus: http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...g%20Wire%20Set

Thanks for the help $400 is alot easier to swallow than $500. Don't get me wrong I know I am driving a Porsche but that is crazy for plug wires. As they say the slope is slippery

Maybe a dumb question, but why are plug wires SOOO expensive??? It just carries the electricity, right? Theoretically, couldn't you just use lamp cord?

Rick Lee 09-10-2007 01:09 PM

You can get just the wires for $150 if you reuse your connectors. That's how I did it. They're shiny red too!

Hm.. not too bad. My MBZ usines Beru plugs with similar ends that are replacable.. and the set costs about the same.. EXPENSIVE.

I've thought about re-using the ends. How much works is that to do? If it's a few hours I might just do the full-set and then maybe resell my old set to someone else that wants to built new ones.. maybe.

I thought I read somewhere on the list about someone just selling the wire. Are they pre-cut or do you have to do that based on the wire you are replacing?

ThX!

Rick Lee 09-10-2007 01:26 PM

Yes, the ones I got were already cut to the right lengths. I just matches each new one with the old ones.

+1
Did the same thing. And in red also. Not hard to do at all.

+2 but mine are blue!

I have a 96 C2 with 63KM. When is it time to replace the wires and what are the tell tale signs to replace them? I believe the plugs are still the original ones.

Rick Lee 09-10-2007 04:10 PM

It's only really time if you see cracks in your wires or know they're arcing. But if you haven't changed your plugs ever, they're about due and you don't want to do this job twice like I did.

:nono: Lamp cord is rated for 250 volts; spark plug wires can handle 40,000 volts or more and generally still work when wet or oil soaked. Lamp cord's insulation would break down after a few sparks.

993 plug wire.

Hello. If your handy and willing to do your own you can purchase factory spark plug "male" screw in ends from the factory P/N 911 609 310 00 and crimp your own wire and re-use your existing Beru boot. The low resistance 7mm wires can be purchase at the length for your need from a local supplier or jobber in your area. I've been doing mine for the past 8 years "every spring" for less than $100. and no problem so far. Buy a couple more spark plug screw ends in case you over crimp a few at the beginning. Hope this trick helps you and others. Cheers. Anthony.

I'll be changing the plugs while in storage and after reading this thread I will definitely change the wires while undertaking this project. I’ll also purchase the BERU wires from Vertex since they have the best prices mentioned here. Hmmm, maybe add it on my x-mas wish list - only 3.x month’s away guys! Nothing's too good for my bear. :)
