I am trying to decide on 18" wheels for my '95 nb 993. I have access to 7.5" and 10" turbo twists, but they need to be refinished. I have also been looking at the Victor Racing LaMans, but I digress. If I go with the turbo twists, I would like them to match my Polar Silver paint. I am having some other paint work done soon, so I could through the wheels in for paint at the same time.

Q1: Is paint good enough, or should I powder coat?

Q2: Can I even get powder coat in a color to match Polar Silver?

On polar silver I say go with a gunmetal color on the twists.

If these are only "temp wheels"..ie you will eventually move to after-market rims (HRE, Fikse, BBS, etc) in 2-3 years time, I would just paint them the stock color to maximize resale value. If you were to paint them to match/contrast then I would paint them black or as Jeff mentioned, perhaps gunmetal grey...if you try for a color match to polar silver and it is off, it will look strange IMHO.

Twists are easy to do yourself and even clear coat them- Dupli color or Worth has kits to do it and its
purty darn easy.

So, what I am hearing here is if I do go with turbo twists (even if they are ugly Noah ), then paint is just fine, so there is no need to powder coat?

I had my 7.5/10 inch turbo twists painted black on my polar silver car and loved the results. I'm happy to post a pic if you like...

My twists were in good shape (physically), but the clearcoat on the wheels was chipping pretty badly...
So I powder coated mine gloss black... I've been impressed how hard the finish is... Seems very durable... Not sure if there's a *down-side* to powder coating, but it's pretty inexpensive at $70/wheel all in... In retrospect, I might have gone *dark gray / smoke*, rather than black... but they look good and the finish quality is very good...

I was recently told that powder coating is potentially dangerous as it could cover up cracks in the wheels and as such not show the danger.
Not sure if this is correct, but if it is, then paint is the way to go.

I just purchased some Carrera 5 spoke wheels that were curbed for $600. I took them to have them powdercoated a gun metal gray for my polar silver cab. I am actually getting a "hyper silver" finish applied which gives it more of a metallic look. Similar to a SL65's wheels. I will get the wheels back tomorrow and post up some pics once I put them on my car. BTW, it cost $150 per wheel to have this hyper silver finish applied and to repair the damage.

I was at a performance show a year ago and we got to talk to the guys at the BBS exhibit. Pretty sure they told us they don't use powdercoating because the temperature changes the temper of the metal in the wheels. I really don't know if this applies to all wheels but it's something worth thinking about.
