I get excited too when I pass emissions. But other people in the room are usually not too happy.

Many Metro Areas around the country include emissions testing with the
annual state safety inspection. Fail the emissions test and fail the inspection.
Then you have to spend money and time to find a way to get the
car back in spec so you can drive it on public roads. This can sometimes
turn into a real hassle and a major inconvenience.

The worst part about it in VA is there is absolutely no way to fudge the test. Even if you bring someone else's car that looks just like yous (works with older 911's), your registration card's bar code has your VIN in it and your car's computer (OBD port) will verify it with the emission station's computer. If you cannot pass and need a waiver, you have to spend at least $680 at one of those gas station places, not your favorite Porsche shop, trying to fix the problem. Only then can you get a waiver and it's only good for one regist. period. And when you do pass, you'll be pleased to know that the state's test doesn't even look at your emissions at all. It only checks the readiness codes in your car's computer. On the test results page, all the boxes for HC, NO, CO, CO2, etc. are marked "N/A". But readiness codes are are marked pass or fail.

Thank god I moved from VA to Florida. No State inspections, No emissions, No state income tax.....but plenty of Q-tip drivers...everything has a price. :-)

My 95 w/106.5K miles recently passed w/flying colors in VA here. The tech said it was VERY, very clean. I was pleasantly surprised. All they did was put a probe in the exhaust - look at a book - rev it - read the machine, and done.
