Is it wrong of me to motor in 6th at 1.6K rpm and admire my motor sound...?
...as I gently drift past the herds of shiny Lexus/Nexus dullness locked in a hypnotic, half-asleep, caffein induced slog to work each day??? I am literally giddy with the thought that they are vicariously enjoying a subliminal, but tantalizingly-momentary, awakening jolt from that husky-voiced big-bore-boxer as we glide past their glassy-eyed half-cracked garage-clean windows. Up the slight incline at 48 mph (or so) in the left lane - ever so softly dusting the 45 mph masses...
Ahhhhh - to be awakened into the day's reality by the soft and deeply sonorous, yet ready to be thunderous, cacophony of that beautiful 3.6L boxer...
I]"...I love the sound of the 3.6L boxer in the morning...sounds like - well..." [/I]
You fill in the blank - I have a real post to post...
And I am momentarily bored crapless no doubt...

No way. You're totally lugging that motor. I learned that in my VW days.
This is what Tony Callas taught me:
1) Start the engine and begin driving immediately, keeping it under 3K 'till the oil temp is at 8:00 (no static warm-ups).
2) Redline it briefly at "8:00 oil" (operating temp) to blow the junk out. 2nd gear is OK for this--road conditions permitting.
3) Keep it at 4K all times thereafter.
Admittedly, I keep it between 3 and 4, but you get the idea. This means that using 6th on the street would be illegal!
Engine sounds even better at 4K than 1.6 anyway. Even better with RSRs, I expect. Santa? You listenin'?

dcdude68 - you seem to be confirming what I've heard before. Unfortunately I tend to drive around in low RPM. Never any "lugging" of the engine, but low RPMs nonetheless. I "feel" like I'm going easy on the equipment. If you have any further detail as to why these engines prefer the 4K rev range, I'd appreciate it???
Thx

I know--it's counterintuitive to everything our fathers taught us about being gentle with our stuff. It has to do with keeping the SAI passages clean. "Going easy" is the biggest reason why there are so many premature top-end jobs. Tony told me that he used to run these at redline for 24 hours, a reference to Le Mans or something, I think.
There is one thing he and my dad agreed on, which I'll add on the "how to drive a 993":
4) At stoplights, take it out of gear and put your left foot on the floor, which preserves the clutch bearings.

There is only one remaining item betwen you and a top end rebuild - engine tray on.

I think the sound you are referring to is the characteristic lugging sound that these engines make at low RPM's. Don't do it! I never go above 4th below 60-65 mph.
