Default Concensus on Trans Lube??

OK, I've done the search and it seems like MTL and Mobil 1 SHC (or Delvac?) are the trans lubes of choice. Can't get MTL anymore, so that leaves SHC/Delvac- yes? SHC and Delvac really, really are the same?

My mechanic put in some fresh dino last year and had the same minor issues as I had before- 1) feel a "bump" while shifting into 2nd from 1st, almost like the tops of the gears bump into each other but no grinding, and 2) downshifting to first is somewhat difficult at greater than 5 to 10 MPH. 45,000 miles on it.

Might Mobil 1 solve the issues? Any other suggestions?

TIA
-Jim

Gear oil will never, ever fix a mechanically worn out part. Yes, Mobil 1 Delvac is the same as Mobil 1 SHC. Delvac is the new name. The main difference between Mobil 1 Delvac and Mobil 1 Standard is the amount of friction modifiers with the Delvac having less. This allows the syncro to grab the gear easier and spin it up. In a fresh transmission, on the street, you could run either and you might not notice a difference. Given a choice though, I'd recommend the Delvac. I have run both in my race car and the Delvac is noticably better under the harsh conditions, espeically with steel syncros.

First off, I think downshifting into 1st over 10mph would be crunchy in even a brand new 993.

Many people swear by Swepco 201. But if you do a search there are many schools of thought. I think everyone's transmission is slightly different after years of use, and what works well in mine might not work so well in yours, etc.

Really? Mine goes into 1st easily on syncros alone (no double clutching) up to 20 or more. Best syncronized 1st gear I've ever driven. Pretty hard to drive around with a 72mph 2nd gear if you can't get into 1st at decent speeds.

Do most 993s have difficult 1st gears?

FWIW, my 60k service invoice has a mere $12.00 charge for transmission and front diff oil, so it's probably non synthetic.

Steve at Rennsport recommended Swepco 201 as a possible - anybody used it in a non-limited slip 993 application?

Tried Swepco and got crunchy so immediately switched back to Mobil 1, and all was good again.

Had Swepco and switched to the MTLR which improved things considerably. Guess I would try Mobile 1 when it has to be changed out but hoping something better comes along.

I used the lighter weight SF MTL-P 75W85 in my old STI (which has a very similar gearbox to the 993, also requiring GL-5 for the R&P). It was the only GL-5 rated 75W85. The lighter oil improved shifting quite a bit. Of course the STI had a more or less indestructible gearbox. Not sure how much reserve there is in the 993 box.

I have been fighting this for a month or so. I tried the Delvac stuff and it was ok on the street but very bad on the track. So then I took it to the dealer and they put in 80W90. I called to ask what was the brand and they said Porsche so I am assuming it's Mobil1. I think shell was another option or approved. Either way on the track it's much much better then the Delvac for me and it's a little tough when cold. But with Delvac I was buzzing 2nd and 3rd at the track but not anymore.

SHC 75w/90 was the factory fill in motorsports gearboxes, alternates were Veedol SAF44 or Castrol SAF-XJ

SHC was recently replaced by Delvac

I recently installed Devlac and had some problems on the track. 2nd to 3rd shift was not happy unless the shift was quite deliberate. Box has been perfect up until now...

No idea what lube was in there before, but I will be changing it before I go out again.

Damn! I recently bought 5 gal of Delvac on this board's recommendations. Anyone else having issues with Delvac?

It's still the most recommended gear oil for modern Porsches. Just use it. No two gearboxes are exactly alike, so testimonials only go so far.

I bought 2 Gallons for the same reason and I up to $700 bucks changing the damn gear oil. Had to go to the dealer to get the right stuff.
