Question 95-98 993 which is best?

Gentlemen

other than condition mileage etc,and the bump to 282hp in 96 are there any reasons to favor one year over another/ In regards to A C2 or C4? Thanks in advance RW

Someone posted on a recent thread that '98s are much more desired for collectibility, and that makes sense. Last of the breed and all that.

You will get a several opinions on this topic.

I bought a 95 C4 purely based on it was right car at the right time. I found a great car at a great price at the time. This was 4 years ago.

I dont even think I knew what a C4 was until after I bought it. I didnt even care to be honest. When Im driving, I dont even think about it.

correct me if i'm wrong but weren't all MY98 C2s 'S' cars?.

Here are the production numbers... that '97 C4 would be a nice collector item since they only shipped 1 - are you asking from a collector / resale standpoint or curious if one year is just plain better then another?

95's would be a better choice if you live in an area with strict smog tests as they dont have the OBDII SAI issues.

My opinion is find the best example for the money. get a PPI and take your time looking.. the right car will pop up.

You'll have to define what do you mean by "best". Best value, best performance (define performance, too), best reliability, best (least) depreciation, best track car. The '95's are a great value and aren't saddled with OBDII, which is often an overblown issue. '98 C2S' and C4S' are more pricey but will hold their value better since they're the last of the air-cooled breed, with the '98 C2S' getting the nod for highest sale prices, despite not being as initially as expensive as their C4S counterparts and not having big red brakes and 4 channel ABS.

Lots of threads on the archives wrt this discussion.

I should have been more specific.handling ,and reliablity would be the issues.I figure HP is the same since 96 so that shouldnt be an issue Thanks RW

reliability about par, except for the noted SAI issues (96-98) which is more of a annoyance than reliability issue. as for handling, proper alignment and suspension setup and you would not know the difference..

a 95 driven and maintained properly could be 5 times less maintenance than a 98 thats been sitting for 7 years.

Here's the bottom line on what you'll find here:

1.) The guys with the '95's think they are the best.

2.) The guys with the '96-'98 cars think they are the best.

Each version has it's particular advantages and issues.

With my '95, I have no CEL issues related to clogged SAI's and have had impeccable reliability. Personally, I think the RWD 993 is a more pure and lively platform than the AWD 993, but the latter is more sure-footed in the rain and snow and is more forgiving.

Figure out your budget and go from there. If your budget is $28K, you're looking at '95's. If it's upper, $40K's or higher, look at '98 C4S' or C2S' (or mrsullivan's arctic silver/black '98 C2S).

yes, the 1998 C2S cars were the last ones on the assembly line... there are many pictures out there of new boxters and 993 C2S on assembly lines at the same time...

You're missing the '98 C4S (299)...?

Please note, the following graph is not the end-all-be-all of production numbers (as has been contested on Rennlist):

I have heard from a number of sources (which I can't, of course, cite at the moment) that there were 993 '98 C2S's built. Any truth to that?
