Mr. B, glad to see that you are on the road to recovery. I had to do the same thing with my 930. It is amazing to see a 911 with the roof all dismantled. Make sure that you post a pic of the new roof in the crate. The crate I received 20 years ago drew a lot of attention at the Porsche dealer when it arrived.

I would urge you to consider seam welding the new roof, rather than spot welding as the factory does on the regular cars. The RS and other race-inspired cars are seam-welded and as I recall, it stiffens the chassis up considerably, like upwards of 20%, which is a huge amount.

Maybe Bill V. or someone else with more knowledge than me can chime in here.

This way you are improving the car further, get to have a stiffer chassis, and if you ever sell it, can argue convincingly that it was made better than new! Just my .02.

Mr. B,

Glad to see that you were able to get through working with the insurance, etc and now in the process of getting her back better than before. Very excited for you and can't wait to see her in a few months.

Good Luck.

Can someone post a link to the original pics of the car? And what happened on the lift? Someone at a dealer lifted it up to high crushing the roof?

The wheels look fantastic. Looks like a lot of work is being done and will come out right. Patience is a virtue....

Actually the roof is only spot welded along the front edge (where the windshield wipers are), some past the 'C' pillars, and along the rear edge. Most of the roof where it meets the rain gutter is just folded and locked by the seam. This is similar to that of a tin roof with a standing seam. The shop will most likely us a structural adhesive to join the pieces along the joint. The section of the roof joint is made up of several pieces forming triangular channel. There is no access there for the spot welder electrodes.

If the seam is welded, there is no way to protect the metal within the channel from corrosion. Also there would be a huge amount of body filler to smooth things out. I am not sure just how RUF does there roofs, but I will trust my Body Shop on this.

As this moves along, I will post pictures as the become available.

Thanks Everyone!!!!

Mark,

Things have been busy with me and keeping the stable of cars in line. Had to do a clutch job on the M5 and some mods to the 360.

What is up with the dorkiphus web site? Was it shut down?

I hope you marked your calander for my July 19 BBQ. Check out the Events section...

George,

No, the site is alive and kicking. I think they moved it to a new host, so maybe you have a dead link. Try clearing your cookies and then re-typing in the URL.

We had a 360 Modena and a 512TR at the last drive; your car would have rounded out the showing.

You're definitely making lemonade out of your lemons!
