I had mine done by North Hollywood Speedometer. The gauges are back-lit and made of translucent plastic covered by matte-finish black paper. They remove the black paper and replace it with a white coating. During the day, the areas that are not covered with the coating (i.e., the numbers and the hash marks) appear to be black because there is no light shining from behind and the coated areas appear white. At night, the light shines through in the no-coating areas with a red glow (due to the backlighting bulbs being red) and the coated areas appear to be black because no light makes it through the coating in those areas. In dusk/medium light situations, the gauge faces appear sort of silvery. You'll see that the factory gauges have cut-outs for the warning lights, while aftermarket gauges simply cover the warning gauges with the coating.
Thanks guys, I'll consider what you say.
I went into North Hollywood Speedometers website and saw some options, It'll take some time to think things over.
Has anyone converted their 993 gauges to white? (like in the turbo?)
Any pics before and after?
How does it look at night?
Has anyone at the same time converted to white LEDS ?
Is that a good combination?
Looking forward to some advice,
Mavel
The turbo did not come w/white gauges..they came with black as standard like all 993s (except the C2S) but silver gauges were an option. The conversion to LEDs has been done and there are pics floating...try searching...
I had white faces on my prior 993, and i must admit I like the black better. More contrast with the needle, so they're easier to read when on the track. The white certainly does look nice, though.
