Rick,
I have my entire shift mechanism on the workbench and can measure for you this weekend.

For those installing a RS shift lever in a C4/S/TT, here's another **** ancedote of the persuit of perfection ...
As the shifter ball joint sits 25mm lower than previously, the front shift rod pulls the shift **** backwards somewhat when installed ( hypoteneuse of a triangle sort of stuff): loosen the locknut and extend the front ball cup two turns to restore the neutral position - items 16 & 17 in the diag of post 18.

Rick,
I just pulled mine out. It's 1/2 " thick. The part number on it - 950.424.227.01
I'm replacing mine with some aluminum.

This is what pelican says.
950-424-227-01-OEM

Rear Shift Coupler Rubber Washer, 911 (1987-89), 911 Turbo (1989) $27.75

So the rubber part has been around for some time.

Ok, I replaced the rubber washer with a piece of aluminum bar and the shifting is very direct. Feels more like a Miata shifter. The sloppiness that was present before, is now gone.

Todd,
I played hooky this morning and installed the RS shift rod (not the lever). I felt that the change was profound - resulting in a nice mechanical 'clack' when going through the gears. The vagueness noticed before is completely gone. I gave it a nice flogging around town afterwards and noticed none of the increased vibration others have mentioned. The PO had already installed the RS shift ****/boot, so I wonder if that has anything to do with less transmitted vibration.

Ok, Andreas, bring that shift rod over in the morning and I'll do a comparison this weekend at the Glen

On the street my change sounds similar to the feel you have, it would be interesting to compare the two, side by side.

Todd,
I'm glad the modification worked. My only concern would be that the rod is now completely rigid. With the stock rod, the rubber bushing allows for torsional movements (as you shift), and with the RS rod, it's the u-joint.

Humm. I have a Weltmeister shifter and it is SO much better than the stocker, but I like the idea of the solid bushing. I have a hunk of Delrin somewhere in the garage. I could probably make a few bushings if someone has a drill press I could use.

Anyone interested in a Delrin bushing?

Patfat,
Is the Weltmeister unit a replacement for the shift lever, or for the shift rod? I kept my stock lever.

Andreas,
Now that you've installed the RS rod (#12) for a mere gadzillion dollars, you've got me thinking of a half gazillion alternative : I have a spare regular rear rod (#29) and coupler (#30) which will give the final dimensions of the RS part. If the end is lopped off rod #29, and a small universal welded in .... plus a clamp & bolt to attach to the trans shifter rod - think there is a chance of this working? -
I suspect that the universal found in many steering shaft links to a rack & pinion would be ~ the correct size.

BTW, is boot #19 also used with the RS rack?

Garth,
Yes, the boot is used. The illustration is incorrect, as the RS rod comes with a disc welded to the rod which is where the boot attaches.

I would agree that an appropriately-sized u-joint from a steering linkage would be a great solution.

My stock shift rod is in perfect shape, so I can measure its static length for you.

Andreas,

The Weltmeister kit replaces Part 1, 11, 15, and 16 in the diagram above. I love the feel of the shifter, but I think with a solid mount bushing it would be better. You're more than welcome to take my car for a spin and try it out.

Patfat,
Thank you for the offer. Have you attended any of the recent Rennlist drives? The next one may be a good time for me to check out your setup.

Andreas
