Default 15w-50w MOBIL 1 (not extended protection) WTF? Is it extinct now?

Had a hell of a time finding the "old" MOBIL 1 15w-50w last time I changed my oil (don't drive the car enough, so I go with the "once a year" routine).

Time to do it and here we go again. Not at AutoZone, WalMart, Target, Car Quest auto parts, Advance Auto Parts, or anywhere else I looked.

Only found the EP (extented protection 15w-50w stuff). And of course it's more money too.

Is this it now? Is this what we should use in our 993s?

I seem to remember something negative about the new Extended Protection formula in a previous topic here several months ago.

I heard it's under a different name now, but I can't remember what it was. Diesel trucks come to mind, but that doesn't sound right does it? Do a search on the 928 forum. We talked about it a couple of months ago.

Doing a search as of now on this (over 100 posts) and it is getting very confusing. Anyone with updates on what the concensus is to use if the "old" 15w 50w is NLA?

well, if you can bear to read this thread start to finish I think you question will be answered.
There IS NO easy answer. Sometimes life is like that.

I'm still confused by decided it doesn't matter much, particularly since I will be changing the oil much earlier than these oils are designed to go.

I bought a case of Mobil 1 15 50 at Costco. Dont care its EPA, BTA, FLT, BTD, or EiEio. I bought it and that's that and I will sleep just as good if doesnt have PPD, FLA, or whatever combination, abbrevation, letter combo, or approved by 4 out of 5 dentists.

Things were getting to analytical for me to worry or be concerned, for me that is and if anyone wants to debate it, have fun.

Well actually, it sounds like you got the "old" UFW (un-****ed with) non- Extended life good stuff buddy. Indeed sleep well. Oh, by the way what would you have to get to ship me a case?

Also, before "new" Coke they had already changed the formula many times through the years without making a big marketing ploy out of it. And no gathering of the townspeople with torches and pitchforks.

Their only mistake was making a big deal out of it when they introduced "NEW COKE".

OK. I just read all 110 posts of the old Mobil 1 thread. And you know what?

I still don't know what oil I should use in my 993. Clear as mud.

Perhaps I can help,...

1) Use the SL-rated M1 15w-50 if you can find it, otherwise use the SM-rated version and add a half bottle of GM's EOS to fortify it.

or

2) Use Swepco 15w-40 or 15w-50 depending on what you do with the car

or

3) Use Brad-Penn 15w-50 racing oil

There are some other good ones too but a little tougher to find,...

I can't find the thread either. Must have went to the abyss. Anyway, Mobil 1's website says " back by popular demand " on 15w 50. I can't help but think that Porsche owners had a little to do with it. Sorry for the goose chase.

Well, OK, I admit, I kind of got that from the thread, Steve. But it seemed like there was some sort of new formulation (next step to the SM stuff) that was on the horizon. I certainly respect your opinions as I too believe the "doing" is far more important than the statistics. But I kind of got the impression that adding the GM EOS was more like a stop-gap measure and not really a concrete solution. Am I wrong? Is there not an oil I can use without this now?

My car is not driven very often so I usually have to change the oil once a year. And yes, it's overdue as I'm not sure what is the best oil and or additive to use. It's not a track car but it does get hot here in FLorida and I do DRIVE the car, not abuse it, but use it, So I want the best protection I can get.

If the EOS and the Mobil 1 SM is still the best solution then I'm on board.

And again, thanks.

I've heard enuff good things about Amsoil that I may give it a shot next change. I'll probably have to get it online though, I haven't seen it any stores around here.

Awesome! This is exactly how I feel concerning this whole ad nauseum debate. I've changed the oil twice since buying the car in '05 and sleep well knowing that I've done it properly - using Mobil 1 15W/50.

At the moment, I'm more worried about how to properly remove the black spoiler grille from the frame...
