Since Swepco was mentioned above...

I use Swepco in my 964, only because the is what the PO's shop had been using.
I went looking for it and could not find it. Actually, IIRC, a shop would sell it to me for about $7/qt.

I contacted Swepco directly and bought a case of 24 qts... they were great to work with! The price per quart was $4.30/qt shipped to my door.
I called and they answered their phone. Crazy.

My shop just switched to ELF brand, since Mobile removed the wear additives from their formula. It is superior to Mobile at this point.

Steve ... if you happen to pick up this thread again ... I found some of the EOS at the local GM dealer here in Vancouver, and it comes in half-litre bottles. When you said add half a bottle, I want to make sure we are talking about bottles of the same size??

Thanks again, Doug

Shell Helix Ultra 5-40 is the factory fill on a Ferrari, and in my opinion, a very robust oil, and better yet, it's still an SL oil. If choosing oils off the recommended/approved list, try to choose oils with an SL or earlier api!

Hey guys I went through this too did enough reading to write a couple books on the subject
Mobil brought back the old red cap 15-50 "due to popular demand" I was confused too with this
gold cap stuff extended wear and I even called mobil. But about 3 weeks ago before I got my
new GT3 I found the new Old stuff at wally world. It has a silver cap but a red label around the 15-50
so I researched it and found the "back due to popular demand article" Its not EXACTLY the same stuff but close. SO thats what I am going to use. I used to use this in all my racing motocross bikes
my 993TT and my 996 GT3 and will use it in the 997Gt3-So thats my advice.
Oh and one other piece of advice listen to what ever Steve Weiner says

Steve ... sorry to fuss over this, but when you say that my half-litre bottle will be just fine, do you mean that it is equivalent to half of the bottle in the size you get and therefore I should use it all, or that I should use half of the half-litre?? Also, is there such a thing as too much ZDDP in our oil??

Best regards, Doug

I'm surprised those fingers have held up this long after all the gratuitous help you have provided to list members over the years (5,500 posts later) ... much appreciated, and I look forward to calling you when it's time for a road trip to Portland to deal with valve guides or other issues ... best regards, Doug :-)

I recall seeing the post a few months back from Charles Navarro and the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 had the highest ZDDP levels. Yes it is expensive, $8.00 per quart, but I only change my oil once per year, car driven 2000 miles per year. It is about time for the yearly oil service and I was going to use the V-Twin oil. My car is never exposed to cold start up at 32 degress or less.

Anyone else using this oil?? I know a guy who races motocross and swears by this oil.

I can confirm that Walmart carries the 15-50 silver cap and the silver cap 0-40 too. Only saw the 15-50 in the jugs.

BTW. Did you guys see that Porsche is changing the oil change intervals for 2008? Its 12K miles or 1 year.

Spark plugs to 24,000 miles.

I would imagine that reducing drain intervals is one way to ensure unnecessary wear to due over-extended drain intervals, especially with reduced Zn and P in the newer SM oils. I think that is as close of a consession to there being a problem with the new oils as we see.

I personally look for an SL approved oil if an approved oil is used, over an SM oil. I have two VWs that call for 505.01 spec 5w40, and after testing most of the popular spec oils, I chose Motul, as it had the highest levels of Zn and P. What I find funny is most 505.01 spec oils are SL or SM, where the manual calls for an API SJ/ACEA A3/B3 spec oil, which I have never seen an SJ that meets all the requirements.

I just picked up some Mobil 1 5w50, silver cap, label says "meets SM & SL regs". I understand that this in not available in the US...? Will still add a sprinkle of EOS to it as per Steve W's advice.
