One more post on wing finishing
Couldn't find anything via search on this...
I have a regular 95 C2 with a very tired looking wing grille. I'd like to repaint it flat black so it looks totally stock. What paints have you used that look stock and wear well? Any finishing tips?
Thanks.

I dont know if I would paint the grille but about 15 years ago when I went to a friends body shop to have the worn centers of my Fuchs alloys on my old Carrera. I wanted to use the factory paint and he said "dude, Krylon! it sticks to a bug" I thought it was funny, Im not sure what he meant -but I used it and it worked great. Krylon Semi-flat Black. Its really hard to screw up. But the texture may not be what you are looking for - its not totally matte. But if you are going spray, use Krylon, its the best. Just wash the grille then give it a quick wipe with laquer thinner to get of any stuff that is too oxidized. But dont get it really wet, that laquer thinner can eat stuff quick. then maybe a tack cloth to pick up any residue or dust and spritz it. Wait 15 min, give it another coat, 3-4 coats from different angles-its amazing what you can miss in a grille
I would repaint my wheels every 6 months, they always looked new. Here is a snap shot to give you an idea of the the texture of Semi-flat, they make a flat too. The semi flat comes out more like the black on the front window track.

Very nice. thanks. I'll pick up a can and try it on an old piece of test metal to see how close it is to the "not worn too badly" spots. Probably closer to a flat black - but then I think the flat looks "blacker" if that's possible.
My buddy told me to try Rustoleum. thoughts anyone?

any brand name spray bomb should work well, there is large business "Car Brite" that caters to all of the body and detail shops and they offer their own brand of spray bombs which i have had great luck with. what ever you use i would highly recommend purchasing the green 3M Scotch Brite Scuff pads to scuff up the surface so the paint has something to stick too, a solvent to remove oils and waxes so it doesnt fish eye and i would also recommend a satin black over flat, flats will show more noticeably any wax, armorall, or oils and last but not least 2" or 3" "BLUE" masking tape and lots of newspaper to eliminate oversprayif you are going to do it on the car. a couple light coats!!!
my 2 pennys of course

I'm looking forward to your pics. I recently used a black dye meant for faded trim - the results were crap. Although I prepped the grille properly, the 'dye' has started flaking off.
I have a new grille insert on the way

the hardest thing about it is removing the fastners without damaging the pegs. try a very small diameter and sharp ice pick to bend the locking features back on the fastners to release them. Porsche has the new clips.

Painted Wing
Finally got around to posting these pics. I painted my wing about a month ago following the guidance of expert painters above. I used a green scotchbrite to even out and rough up surface for better adhesion then used lacquer thinner to wipe off black part. Put one layer of tape down first so I didn't hit the rest of the paint with it. This is after three good coats of Rustoleum satin black, used just shy of a whole can on it. I am reasonably happy with the results - certainly not a new wing, but does not look like it was spray painted unless you get within a couple of feet and know what you're looking for. Notes:
1) Make sure your car is waxed before you do this and for god sakes, cover up every bit of paint you can. I got overspray on my pass side rear quarter. It came off with very mild polishing compound but freaked me out when I felt it.
2) Set aside plenty of time to even out the remaining finish before you start. I got lazy and close up you can see a fine edge where the existing finish was and where it wore away (underneath the new paint).
3) Get some nice pieces of card stock and stick it all the way up underneath the wing, trimming if necessary to COMPLETELY cover the black part underneath. I didn't want to hit this so I stuffed a buttload of newspaper under there. but back near the tail of the wing in the corners, a bit of paint got through so there's a bit of shine on that piece underneath.
4) The satin is just about the same finish as the black "Carerra" script on the tail. It looks very "stock," although I've no idea what a new grille looks like.
So far, so good - I drive a lot so it's already been in the FL sun for about 1500 miles (it's been raining, so please excuse the dirt in the pics). If I remember I'll post some more pics every now and then.
